Dr. Joseph Pownall made an overland journey from Louisiana to California seeking gold in 1849. After working the Mariposa diggings, he went to Columbia in 1852 and bought stock in the Tuolumne County Water Company, where he served as a company officer until his death. Dr. Pownall married Mary C. Harrison Newall, the widow of William Henry Newell, who had been one of the founders of the Tuolumne County Water Company in 1851.

Sharp of De Soto Parish, La., to Dr. Joseph Pownall of Stockton, Calif., discusses Pownall's seeking gold in California, community news in De Soto Parish, cotton and corn crops, flooding on the Red River, and other men from the area who have gone to California (May 8, 1850). A letter sent by William A. Sharp of Natchitoches, La., to Dr. Joseph Pownall of Columbia, Calif., discusses destruction in the area by Federal soldiers during the Civil War, local men who served in the war, news of Sharp's family, and complaints over Reconstruction (August 16, 1870).
