Types of materials in the collection include articles; speeches; surveys; research and lecture notes; certificates, diplomas, and awards; photographs; correspondence; printed material; scrapbooks; medals; ephemera; artifacts; books and manuscripts; obituaries; greeting cards; reports; letterhead; newspaper clippings; and meeting minutes. The collection is comprised of biographical information; articles written by or about Potter; speeches; Potter's research notes and papers on a variety of subjects, including patent laws, fuel, steam generators, national defense, engineering experimental stations, nuclear power, land grant institutions, and engineering education; personal and business correspondence; documentation of Potter's work on the faculty of Kansas State University and Purdue University, and his role as President of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc.; materials relating to Potter's memberships and activities with various engineering societies and organizations, such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Engineering Council, the National Society of Engineers, and the American Society for Engineering Education; materials relating to Potter's work with the President's Highway Safety Conference, consulting for the U.S. government, serving as executive secretary of the National Patent Planning Commission, surveying various universities, and working on the National Science Advisory Board on Railroad Research; and notes and manuscripts for his various books and reports. The Charles A. Ellis Papers (1911-1946; 0.4 cubic ft.) document the professional career of structural engineer Charles A. Ellis. Types of materials in the collection include correspondence, writings, printed material, photographs, organization chart, financial estimates, and information on professional achievements. Although some biographical information and a small number of personal photographs are included in the collection, the papers primarily document Ellis' involvement with the design of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Notably missing are Ellis' faculty papers from his tenure at the University of Michigan, University of Illinois, and Purdue University. The Papers are divided into three series: Golden Gate Bridge, 1929-1938; Professional Career, 1919-1945; and Photographs, 1911-1946. Within each series, items are arranged chronologically by type of material. The Golden Gate Bridge series documents the design and initial construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. It includes correspondence, financial estimates, letterhead, organization chart, newspaper clippings, and an article written by Ellis on the method he devised for his calculations. The Professional Career series documents certain aspects of the professional career of Charles Ellis. The inauguration of James R. Killian as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's tenth president on April 2, 1949, was preceded by the two-day "Mid-Century Convocation on the Social Implications of Scientific Progress" on March 31 and April 1. The collection contains thirty-seven 7 1/2 ips 7-inch reel-to-reel audio tapes of the three general assemblies and six panel discussions held during the 1949 midcentury celebrations; tapes of the inauguration ceremonies; 1949 video footage of the convocation; and a microfilm copy of a scrapbook on the convocation. The collection contains materials compiled by John E. Burchard for his book , including texts of the panel presentations. The collection also includes video recordings created in 1999 as part of an exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of the convocation. Mid-Century: The Social Implications of Scientific Progress
