Manuscript, in a single hand, of a continuation of Horace Walpole's Catalogue of Engravers. The volume consists of brief biographies of about 135 engravers in Great Britain, which include birth and death information; their primary artistic media and memorable works; and occasional comments on their personalities, as well as Noble's opinions of their work. Engravers mentioned in the volume include John Boydell; Charles Brotherton; Francis Vivares; Charles Spooner; Robert Thew; Robert Hancock; Richard Dalton; and Jacob Schnebbelie. He records the tombstone inscription of William Woollett; transcribes an excerpt from Pope's Dunciad pertaining to Elisha Kirkall's engraving of Elizabeth Haywood; and includes an entry for his eldest daughter, Marina Carlers Noble, who he wished could have stayed with him and excelled in her art, but she married and left for India, and ceased engraving. In his preface, Noble explains his intention of continuing where Walpole left off and discusses the state of engraving and its patronage in Great Britain, and in a note at the beginning of the volume dated 1818, he records the numbers of painters, sculptors, architects, amd engravers in Britain and notes particularly that among the painters there are 43 women. Three engravings are pasted in throughout the manuscript: one stipple engraving of cherubs on the title page; one on p. 183 representing Noble's eldest daughter Marina Noble's early work; and one at the end of the manuscript. Also pasted in is a pen and wash drawing of children at play one the first page of the preface and another pen and wash drawing of children outside a farmhouse at the end of the preface. The volume also includes a genealogy of the Kempe family dated 1824, tipped in, and a printed appeal for donations to Mr. James Peller Malcolm, for alleviation of his misfortune and distress, tipped in after his entry in the volume.
