Title: Papers, 1801-1839.

Twenty octavo volumes, 1801-1810, contain daily diary entries recording Greenwood's activities. The 21st octavo volume is a compilation of extracts from Greenwood's diaries, 1801-1825, that was prepared by Mrs. John Bartholomew in the early part of the twentieth century. Apparently the original diaries for 1811-1825 were then destroyed. The volume of extracts includes a checklist of Greenwood's portraits. The diaries contain frequent entries on travel around New England as he visited with friends and relatives (1801 entries provide information on his late uncle, Robert Dunlap). Other entries describe teaching and keeping store in Westminster, student life at Dartmouth College and West Point, painting in New York City with Edward Savage, business activities with Strong and Dodd, active social life in Boston, and most predominantly his art work. Greenwood commented often on politics (he was an ardent Federalist), the War of 1812, society, visits with prominent political figures, e.g., John Quincy Adams, meetings with notable artists of the period, and Greenwood's immersion in his work on the New England Museum, which he purchased and went to great lengths to re-organize in Boston and Providence, Rhode Island. The two folio volumes are account books for the New England Museum and the Gallery of Fine Arts. The accounts for the Gallery of Fine Arts, 1818-1825, show only records of the receipt of admission fees. The New England Museum accounts, 1818-1824, are more substantial and list receipts and expenditures, including museum purchases. The collection also includes a folder of manuscripts containing a variety of material, including an admission ticket for the New England Museum, receipts, one business letter, and a hand-lettered sign. Also included in the folder is a lengthy letter, c. 1835, from Greenwood to attorney Robert Gould Shaw (1776-1853) and the Rev. Edward Thompson Taylor (1793-1871) concerning the future of the New England Museum and a proposed school for sailors in the event of Greenwood's death. The letter contains a guide and abstract of the museum. The folder includes rough notes and copies of letters of Mrs. John Bartholomew concerning Greenwood, c. 1930s.

The American Antiquarian Society's painted portrait, miniature and sculpture collection includes portraits of Society members, benefactors, and directors as well as portraits related to the manuscript and book collections. Some are by Worcester and Boston area artists; others by nationally recognized painters. The collection reflects the changing tastes in portraiture from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries and includes both academic and non-academic styles.The collection was begun by Isaiah Thomas as a supplemental collection to the library holdings, and in many respects, it retains that supporting role. There are portraits of book and alamanc publishers, poets and newpaper editors, as well as likenesses of artists and authors. Taken together, these pictures tell a part of the Society's story since its founding in 1812. The collection includes portraits of men, women and children. There are several portraits of Isaiah Thomas and his family, all of which are documented in the Thomas Family papers. There is an important group of five likenesses of the Mather family, including Cotton Mather, which were given to the society by decendants in 1815 after Isaiah Thomas purchased the Mather library. Portraits of Massachusetts politicians include a likeness of Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop and Senators Edward Everett and Charles Sumner. Seventy-three artists are represented in the collection, including Salem painter Michele Felice Corné, Boston's Ethan Allen Greenwood and the miniature painter Eliza Goodridge. Regional artists like Zedekiah Belknap and William Willard are also included in the collection. The Society commissioned portraits of its librarians, directors and members from prominent New York and Boston painters such as Daniel Huntington and Edwin T. Billings. The collection also includes several self portraits, including a canvas by Mather Brown and another by the lithographer and painter Bass Otis.

This collection is a compilation of Park's extensive correspondence, for the period 1910 to 1924, with museum directors, portrait owners, authors, publishers, photographers, art connoisseurs, and a variety of scholarly institutions concerning his work in the field of colonial art. Included are letters on the value of specific works, letters with detailed descriptions of portraits, letters on the compilation of photographs of old Worcester views (with which Park became involved in 1924), letters on the advisability of unearthing the old gravestones on Worcester's common. There are also many photographs of portraits collected by Park and by Clarence Saunders Brigham (1877-1963).

This collection contains papers of Thomas H. Gage and his two sons, Homer Gage and T. Hovey Gage. The papers of Thomas H. Gage include: medical notes, 1852-1883; professional correspondence, 1850-1908; and medical addresses and hospital reports, 1862-1908. The papers of Homer Gage include: a journal of a visit to Washington, D.C., in 1878; social and professional correspondence, 1888-1932; and medical addresses and papers, 1901-1935. The papers of T. Hovey Gage include: correspondence on the portrait artists Ralph Earl (1751-1801) and Ralph E. W. Earl (ca. 1785-1838), and Earl genealogy, 1894-1935; miscellaneous material on Ralph Earl, 1812-1935, which includes notes and correspondence on several Worcester County portrait artists, 1891-1935. There are also catalogs, miscellaneous portrait reproductions, newspaper clippings on portraits, and a checklist of painters from Boston directories, 1914-1935.

Photographs of portrait paintings and daguerreotypes of Dr. Benjamin Shurtleff, originally of Plymouth (later Carver), Mass. and later a practicing physician in Boston, and his wife Sally Shaw Shurtleff. The portraits were painted by Ethan Allen Greenwood and Jane Stuart; the photographers are unknown. There is also one snapshot photograph of the Shurtleff family house, built in North Chelsea (now Revere), Mass. in 1837. All of the photographs were probably taken ca. 1942 by an unknown photographer.
