Collection includes Hardin's correspondence, proofs, drafts, reports, maps, articles, and speeches, as well as research materials collected by him. The papers pertain to his efforts to mark historical sites in Louisiana, especially the Presidio de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Los Adaes site in Natchitoches Parish, La., and to researching, writing, and publishing his book. The research materials consist of original historical documents, translations of French and Spanish colonial records, and reproductions of documents and maps in European, Washington, and Louisiana repositories that relate to Louisiana's early history, especially land claims and settlement in northwest Louisiana. The principal subjects of his research are the clearing of the Red River raft and the removal and migration of the Caddo Indians from Louisiana. Included in his research materials are land grants and other documents of Marquis de Maison Rouge and Baron de Bastrop, papers of Juan Filhiol relating to Ouachita Parish, La.; letters, statements, and other records of Indian agents in northwestern Louisiana Jehiel Brooks and Charles A. Sewall, who dealt with the Caddo Indians. Civil War materials are also present and include letters,Confederate currency and notes, Hardin's research and notes regarding the Red River Campaign, and the letter book of J. W. Sims, assistant quartermaster of the post at Natchitoches, Trans-Mississippi Department. Included in the Civil War materials are the letters (1861-1877) of John C. Moncure (1861-1877), Shreveport lawyer, Confederate soldier, and Reconstruction-era state legislator. He writes of his participation in the Battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill and corresponds with his father in Virginia, who relates developments there, and with French General Camille Polignac, about the cause of the South and Reconstruction. The large group of maps contains maps of Louisiana and various locations within Louisiana, including towns, parishes, military posts, and Civil War battles. Photographs include portraits of the wife of Henry Shreve, the Red River raft (ca. 1872), and the site of the Presidio of Los Adaes, Natchitoches Parish, La.
