In the summer of 1961, the Freedom Riders, a group of mostly young people, both black and white, including Albert Gordon, risked their lives to challenge the system of segregation in interstate travel in the South. The University of Mississippi's Freedom riders oral history project includes interviews recorded in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of that summer.

Soundly denouncing "two or three scandalous Anonymous Rhapsodys ... written by Maevius the Scotch Dogralist," in which he "makes bold with the names of several persons of merit." He declares, "Maevius is as much below a Beast as a Beast is below a Man," but ends by saying, "Thus, sir, have I sent you a short satire upon nothing, upon which a noble poet ... was pleased to write a Panegyrick. I know you will have the goodness to excuse the defects of a Trifle which was intended to give you one moment of Diversion."
