William M. Dowden was born in Indiana and taught school in that state for 10 years before entering the business college field. Before coming to Lansing, he was the manager of the Brown Business College at Moline, Illinois. He purchased the Lansing Business University in 1920. He was the president of the institution for twelve years. Dowden was a leader in his field. He was the regional director of the National Association of Accredited Commercial Schools, and a member of the National Commercial Teachers' Association. He was an active member of the Lansing Kiwanis Club, the Masonic fraternity and the First Universalist Church of Our Father.

This collection primarily documents the Lansing Business University. Some of the records date past the death of William M. Dowden (c. 1932). The papers are arranged according to the following series: Series 1. Certificates, 1900-1937. Contains the official certificates that were proof of membership in the National Association of Accredited Commercial Schools and ownership of stocks. Includes Dowden's teaching certificates. Series 2. Correspondence, 1918-1933. Contains both business and personal correspondence and rough drafts of reports. Series 3. Estate files, 1927-1935. Contains William Dowden's will, and the accompanying files that were part of the probate record. Series 4. Minutes, 1908-1927. Contains minutes that detail the expenditures of the business school, especially on special dinners. Series 5. Publications, 1924-1944. Contains samples of the school newspaper, and pamphlets explaining the basic tenants of the Universalist Church.
