Title: National Academy of Design records

The records of New York City's National Academy of Design measure 92.7 linear feet and date from 1817-2012. The records pertain to all three constituents of the tripartite organization consisting of the Academy, a membership body of artists founded in 1825; the school, founded at the same time to promote arts education; and the exhibition program, inaugurated in 1826. Extensive administrative records include minutes, committee files, director files, annual reports, constitutions, and correspondence and subject files of council officers. Exhibition records, also substantive, date to the Academy's first annual exhibition and include gallery and special exhibitions, as well as exhibitions at the Academy's museum, established in 1979. The collection also includes gifts and funding files, especially relating to endowments and prizes; membership records; National Academy Association records; Ranger Fund assignments; extensive files pertaining to the school's administration, courses of instruction, registrations, and attendance; twenty scrapbooks containing clippings and ephemera; Society of American Artists records; correspondence and ephemera from other organizations; transcripts from oral histories with Academy members; extensive photographic material documenting artists, members, the school, exhibitions, buildings, and artwork created by Academy members; artist files containing correspondence, writings, and sketches from those associated with the Academy; and assorted printed material and ephemera.

Title: Letterbook, 1899-946.

Letterbook, 1899-1946, containing correspondence received by New York City editor and arts administrator Florence Nightingale Levy. Letters are principally written by artists and associates of Levy's and principally pertain to her activities as editor of the American Art Annual and her involvment in the fields of arts administration and education and concern such topics as invitations to public functions held in honor of Levy, museum openings, publications, and congratulations to Levy acknowledging her contribution to the art world. Individual correspondents include: Henry Turner Bailey, Charles C. Curran, Robert W. De Forest, John H. Finley, James P. Haney, and many others. Also present are three photographs showing Levy at her desk as manager of the Art Alliance of America, the entrance to the Arts Council gallery at the Hotel Barbizon, and a guidance clinic set up by the Art Education Council at an arts Convention. Includes index.

Milch Gallery records

Title: Milch Gallery records

The records of Milch Gallery document the business transactions of the corporation and the professional and personal relationships of the Milch brothers with the artists they represented, as well as with the larger community of artists and art dealers between 1911 and 1995. Unfortunately, early correspondence is sparse. In a letter responding to a 1951 request for historical information, Milch replied: "Several years ago [1947] we had to give up our gallery at 108 West 57th Street, and move to smaller quarters here. Since we had no room for old records, we had to destroy most of them."Alphabetical files are comprised mainly of incoming correspondence from 1911 to 1962. Correspondence concerns arrangements for exhibitions, sales and consignments, advice to collectors and executors of estates, and routine business matters. A number of the artists represented in these files were friends of the Milch brothers and some of their letters mention their personal lives as well as their formal business with the Gallery. Collectors who routinely dealt with Milch Galleries included John Gellatly, Mary Blair, Hersey Egginton, Carlton Palmer, and Edward Coykendell; a three volume manuscript catalogue of Coykendell's collection is included. Among the estates handled by Milch were Willard Metcalf, John Twachtman, Abbott H. Thayer, Maurice Fromkes, and Thomas Moran.Also found are sales records and other financial records such as general ledgers, sales and purchase records, and tax information.Printed matter consists of gallery exhibition catalogs, checklists, invitations, announcements, publications, and scrapbooks. Many catalogs and checklists are annotated with prices and other information. A complete run of Milch Galleries <emph render="italic">Art Notes</emph>, issued intermittently from 1918-1928/29 is preserved with the gallery records. as is a scrapbook relating to early exhibitions held at the Edward Milch Galleries and E. &amp; A. Milch, Inc., and artists represented by them.Photographs included with the records are less voluminous than might be expected, and pictures of works of art predominate. There are also a very small number of exterior and interior photographs of Milch Gallery, photographs of people including artists, Edward and Albert Milch, and photographs of groups such as Ten American Artists and the Associated Dealers in American Paintings.The 1995 and 2014 additions measure 3 linear feet and date from 1922-1995. The work and professional activities of Beaux Arts sculptor Chester Beach (1881-1956) and his family's efforts to exhibit and sell work from the estate are documented by project files, business records, correspondence, scrapbooks, printed material, and photographs. The papers also include many artist-designed Christmas cards sent and received by the Beach family, and artwork by Chester Beach and others.

Papers, 1904-1957, mainly documenting her artistic career. They include a looseleaf notebook listing her paintings, their description, history and disposition, with a list of paintings sold, and a list of pictures painted in the summer of 1931 in Cuernavaca, Mexico; a small address book; photographs of her paintings, her family, and her summer home at Cragsmoor (N.Y.); a notebook containing a diary of trips to England, France and Spain in 1904, 1905 and 1922; a diary for 1926; some copies of a printed newsletter, the Cragsmoor journal; letters, mostly dealing with her work, written by and to dealers, museums, and purchasers, but including a copy of a letter written by Turner's mother in 1864; scrapbooks containing clippings, letters, menus, Christmas cards, catalogs of exhibitions of Turner's paintings, and other memorabilia. Her diary for 1904 includes descriptions of visits to the studios of Sargent, Lavery, and Edwin Austin Abbey. The material documents the honors and awards she received, and also includes miscellaneous personal items: a passport issued in 1922, an affidavit by a cousin documenting her date of birth, her registration book documenting her studies at Columbia Teachers' College, receipts, invitation cards, and caricatures drawn for her in ink and watercolor by Charles Curran. There is also some genealogical material, including a bookplate of her great-grandfather, John Pintard, and letters acknowledging gifts from her to the New-York Historical Society.
