The letters report news of the Garza War and subsequent legal cases since Bourke's departure from Texas. The letter from Luby discusses efforts by Captain George F. Chase to supress Catarino Garza and gives detailed accounts of arrests and trials of guides employed by Chase, for whom Luby served as bondsman. Luby also discusses trials and sentencing of Garzistas and his opinions about the presence of United States soldiers in the Texas border region. He briefly refers to Bourke's campaign against the Garzistas, lawsuits involving Bourke in Rio Grande City, and family news. Letters from Manuel Romero acknowledge news from Bourke concerning the aftermath of the Garza War and the presence of Catarino Garza in Chicago. He also briefly discusses Bourke's writings on Indians and the Rio Grande frontier.

Contains the following types of materials: organizational documents, clippings, maps / charts, financial account book, registers, military court materials. Contains information pertaining to the following wars: Late Indian Wars. Contains information pertaining to the following military unit: 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment. General description of the collection: The George F. Chase papers include Cadet Chase's West Point financial account book, 1867-1871. Other material includes miscellaneous official papers and clippings, mostly concerning his service in the 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment. Among them are three headquarters (HQ) books: testimony and verdicts at military trials which he adjudged, 1886-1888; summary of verdicts of trials over which he presided, 1896-1898; and roster of officers (including their assignments, supplies issued to them, etc.), January-April, 1898. A large number of clippings, in addition, are available concerning the Catarino Garza revolution against Porfirio Diaz in January, 1892, and Chase's role in maintaining the inviolability of American soil during it. A few clippings are on hand criticizing George Crook's conduct of operations against Crazy Horse and Geronimo. The lone item on the Philippine Insurrection is a street map of Manila, prepared in 1901.

Chase photograph collection consists of photos from the mid-part of General Chase's Army career. The photos include views relating to the 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment and the II Cavalry Corps in 1898 as well as several of Samuel Baldwin Mark Young. There are only a few photos of General Chase's illustrious career. There are also eight photos of Apache Indian males and females along with a camp scene.

The collection includes correspondence, estate papers, legal proceedings, genealogical notes, land records, and miscellaneous items pertaining to many members of the Chase family of Maryland. Particularly prominent are the Reverend Thomas Chase (25 items, 1738-1773, including twelve sermons); Judge Samuel Chase (signer of the Declaration of Independence and Supreme Court justice, ca. 10 items, 1783-1806, and estate papers); Judge Jeremiah Townley Chase (ca. 15 items, 1783-1824, and estate papers); Thomas Chase (II) and his wife Matilda Chase (29 items, ca. 1803-1819); Ann Chase (51 items, 1783-1852); Elizabeth Chase (4 items, 1813-1822); and Richard M. Chase (4 items, 1889-1899, including legal papers). Other correspondents include Mary (Mrs. Richard) Caton (22 items, 1811-1836); Robert Goodloe Harper (2 items, 1822-1823); and a noteworthy letter of the Marquis Wellesley to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, 1825, on family affairs and the greatness of the Carrolls. Some materials concern Commodore Stephen Decatur, including two letters by his widow, 1820, and her memorial to Congress, 1849; others relate to members of the Pinkney, Ridout, and Ridgely families. There are substantial genealogical notes on the Chase and Townley families; poems by Francis Scott Key and others; political broadsides; newspaper clippings, some on the death of Ensign George Chase, 1792; and social invitations from Lord Buchan and the Annapolis Assembly.
