Paul Leaton Corbin was born in Carlinville, Illinois on September 28, 1875. He received the A.B. from Blackburn College in 1898. After graduating with the B.D. degree from Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1903, he and his wife, Miriam Locke Corbin (1878-1928), departed for China's Shansi Province where they and other Oberlin missionaries began to rebuild the missions of the American Board which had been destroyed in the 1900 Boxer Rebellion. Corbin was active at the Taigu station as an adviser to H.H. Kung, principal of the boys' school, Ming Hsien. He wrote frequently of his experiences as a missionary and assembled a 1,500-volume collection of English-language books on China which he bequeathed to Oberlin College Library. In February 1928, he returned to the U.S. on furlough and was with his wife when she died in March of that year. He returned to China in 1931 and retired the following year. He died suddenly at the age of 60 in Taigu, on January 9, 1936.

The records of OSMA date from 1881 to 1988. Earlier records discuss missionary activities of the Oberlin China Band such as evangelism, teaching, medical work, and the operation of opium refuges in the Shansi province of northern China. The bulk of the records, however, concern the educational activities of OSMA. Administrative and financial records from 1908-49 document the founding and operation of primary and middle schools in Shansi. Records from 1950 to the present trace the secularization of OSMA and the increasing emphasis on two-way educational exchange of students and scholars.

The papers of China missionary Paul Leaton Corbin, consisting almost entirely of printed materials, document the educational and evangelical work of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in North China from 1900 to 1936. They also provide evidence of the activities of several foreign missionary organizations headquartered in Shanghai. The small amount of correspondence includes circular letters (1908-35) from other missionaries received by Paul Corbin, which describe educational and relief work as well as contemporary political events in China. The bulk of the collection consists of publications collected by Corbin relating to Chinese culture, history, and Christian work in China. These include conference proceedings, periodicals, reports, and miscellaneous printed items such as devotional tracts, clippings from Chinese newspapers, and handbooks for missionaries.
