Griffith entered the Royal Navy in 1811. Was a midshipman on board the HMS Griper during William Parry's first expedition (1819-1820) to the Arctic and served as midshipman on the HMS Hecla on the second expedition (1821-1823). He later served as a lieutenant on the HMS Barreto Junior in 1845 when it provisioned Franklin's expedition. Griffith Point on Melville Island and Griffith Creek in Hecla Strait are named for him.

Maria Edgeworth writes to Mrs. William Griffith, Burlington, N.J., ca. 1815 or 1816, inviting her to visit, describing her family, and including a drawing of their house by her sister Honora [later engraved, included here]; to William Stuart, Archbishop of Armagh, 19 July 1818, forwarding some pages of her father's Memoirs for approval. To Captain [Francis Bond] Head, 18 February 1827, complimenting him on his book, Rough notes taken during some rapid journeys across the Pampas and among the Andes; to Mrs. Eliza Fletcher, 7 February 1835, responding to an inquiry concerning the letters or papers of Sir Humphry Davy.

Title: Logbook, 1819-1820.

Logbook, 1819 May 11--1820 November 3, kept while serving as a midshipman on the HMS Griper during the British arctic expedition to find the Northwest Passage. It includes detailed observations on Winter Harbor on Melville Island while the expedition wintered over. The logbook contains daily records on locations and events as well as a series of highly detailed pen-and-ink drawings of the shoreline of Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound with latitude and longitude noted. Also included are daily meteorological records for the entire time the expedition was underway.
