Tallmadge in the process of his study of Old Regular, Primitive, and United Baptist hymnody in eastern Kentucky, western North Carolina, and western Virginia during the 1960's and 1970's.

The video recordings in this collection document the Fifth National Festival of Black Storytelling held at Berea College November 12-14, 1987. Features of the event included concurrent storytelling sessions for various ages, the Second National Liars Contest, an informal "Swapping Ground" for storytellers, and scholarly lectures on the status of Blacks in Appalachia. Among the fifteen master storytellers participating were Mary Carter Smith and Linda Goss, cofounders of the National Festival of Black Storytelling. Among Berea College faculty who made presentations were Cleophus Charles, Loyal Jones, William H. Tallmadge, and William H. Turner. Other scholars included Edward J. Cabbell, William Hayden, and Robert P. Stuckert.

The symposium was conceived by Berea faculty members, Loyal Jones and William Tallmadge. Presenters looked to challenge the pioneering work of George Pullen Jackson by suggesting that lining hymnody was still being performed by white singers after 1850. In addition, they looked to prove that lining hymnody represented the mainstream of rural hymnody from 1650 to 1850. The audio recordings document each of the seventeen oral presentations, and performances by the A.L. Phipps Family, the Wiregrass Sacred Harp Singers, and Sunday services at the Left Beaver Old Regular Baptist Church at Martin in Floyd County, Kentucky.

Freeman, Douglas Southall, 1886-1953,. Tallmadge-Norwood-Wilkins collection, 1769-1962 (bulk 1851-1934).

The bulk of this collection deals with the Tallmadge family, specifically revolutionary war Col. Benjamin Tallmadge. Descendants Andrew Gustavus Norwood and Emily Wilkins collected family letters and papers for a book about Tallmadge, Washington's Secret Agent Benjamin Tallmadge. The collection includes illustrations of Benjamin, his son William Smith Tallmadge, and other family members for this book. The Tallmadge papers include a photostat of an alphabet-number code; engravings of Lafayette; newspaper clippings, passport, and letters from, to, or about Benjamin H. Tallmadge; and an 1875 Tallmadge family genealogy. Also includes collateral family records for Richard Stockton Howell's Civil War service and medical disability, Benjamin Tallmadge's descendants (William Smith Tallmadge, Henry Floyd Tallmadge, Maria Tallmadge Cushman, and Benjamin H. Tallmadge). The Norwood papers include passports for A.G. Norwood and his wife Mary Floyd Tallmadge Norwood, and a French wedding invitation. The Wilkins papers include letters from Douglas Southall Freeman, family members, and others, newspaper clippings of the Webb House, Litchfield, Conn., 1959, concerning John André, postcards of Litchfield, and poems.
