Miller was born in Escatawpa, Mississippi, in 1916. He recieved a B.A. degree in English from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and later earned an M.A. (1947) and Ph.D. (1954) in English from the University of Virginia. Miller was a specialist in early American literature and an authority on Edgar Allan Poe. He taught at the University of Alabama, Louisiana State University, Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Virginia, and the Virginia Military Institute before joining the faculty at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, in 1967. He remained there until his death in October 1979.

The collection contains a copy of Wolfe's last letter, 1938 Aug. 13, Seattle, to Maxwell Evarts Perkins and a copy of a letter, 1945 Dec. 29, Fred W. Wolfe to William B. Wisdom on his mother's death. There are also 5 letters from Wisdom to Miller regarding Wisdom's knowledge of the Wolfe family, his Wolfe letters and Miller's article on the author. Letters and cards from Mabel Wolfe Wheaton answer questions on Wolfe's death and criticize Miller's article. Perkins and Edward C. Axwell write to Miller on the same subject. Newspaper clippings and a pamphlet discuss Wolfe, his mother, and the Wolfe home in Asheville, N.C. Included in the collection is a holiday magazine article, Notes from a Western journal, containing selections from Wolfe's diary of his last trip before his death.

The collection contains the annotated, corrected typescript of Poe's Helen remembers, 1979. There are also annotated copies of the typescript of Miller's 1973 revision of John Henry Ingram's Poe collection at the University of Virginia, 1960; and of Miller's transcript of Ingram's manuscript The true story of Edgar Allan Poe, ca. 1905. In addition there are business papers regarding the publication of Building Poe biography, 1977. Source material on Poe, his friends and family, and on Ingram consists chiefly of copies of late 19th century newsclippings, and of the correspondence of Ingram and Whitman. The collection also contains photographs of Sarah Helen Whitman, Manet's sketch of Poe, and the Providence Athenaeum Library, and a card file containing Miller's notes on Poe's correspondence.
