Record of career, in part, of one of Australia's finest musicians, Ernest Llewellyn. The papers include correspondence, personal documents, appointment books, invitations, cuttings, reports, programs dating back to the 1930s, and music scores with his markings and annotations. There are no papers from the Melbourne and Sydney periods of his career. However, his Queensland appointment with the State String Quartet, and his Canberra appointments, as Director of the Canberra School of Music, and as musical director and conductor of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, are well documented. There are also papers from his year in America on the William Kapell Memorial Scholarship (1956), and from invitations as an 'honored guest' and later a juror at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, Moscow in 1974 and 1978. Additional papers received July 2001. Dates range from 1943-1998. Papers relate to Hephzibah Menuhin.

Unpublished biography of the violinist, conductor and music teacher Ernest Llewellyn (1915-1982). Born at Kurri Kurri, Llewellyn was educated at the West Maitland High School and the Sydney Conservatorium. Originally a violinist in A.B.C. Studio orchestra in Sydney, he was Sub-leader of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1940-1942, leader of the Queensland State String Quartet in 1944-1948 and Concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1919-1965. He was Director of the Canberra School of Music and Conductor of the Canerra Symphony Orchestra in 1965-1980. Attached to the biography is a list of the programs of concerts of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra conducted by Llewellyn, 1965-1982.

Farmer's Blaxland Galleries, August 21st to 25th, 1933; and Pierre Vidoudez : Maitre Luthier. Geneva : Pezzotti, [between 1940 and 1949]. The collection includes letters from Ernest, Ruth and Dafydd Llewellyn, William E. Dolphin, Sheina Ramsay, Roy Malan, Lionel Tertis, Jean Frere, Zlatko Balokovic, and Lady Evelyn Barbirolli. There are newspaper cuttings, a list of instruments crafted by Smith, drawings of the violin construction process by Dafydd Llewellyn, and letters relating to the sale of A. E. Smith's Quartet of Instruments to the Australian Government. Includes a transcript of a talk given by Smith on radio 2BL in June 1934, entitled 'The Romance of Violin Making'. Also includes photographs of Smith, his workshop and shopfront, family, and instruments. There are photos of A. E. Smith with Ruggerio Ricci; Lauri Kennedy; Roy Malan and Yehudi Menuhin.
