Collection consists of travel documents and letters received, which detail a trip to England, Scotland and France undertaken by Buckminster, accompanied by fellow Unitarian minister Samuel Cooper Thacher. On the trip, Buckminster met scholars, writers, politicians, and other Unitarian ministers (many of the letters are dinner invitations) and gathered a large collection of books that would form the core of the library of the Boston Athenaeum. Travel documents include (in folder 1): Passport for Buckminster requesting British naval commanders and privateers not to interfere with his passage to Liverpool aboard the U.S. frigate John Adams, signed by Andrew Allen, Jr., British consul for New England, 1806 May 7; passport for Buckminster signed and sealed by Massachusetts governor Caleb Strong and John Avery and endorsed by Marc-Antoine Giraud, French commissaire for New England, 1806 May 9; passport (with an elaborate engraved heading) for Buckminster signed by Don Juan Stoughton, Spanish consul for New England, 1806 May 9; passport signed and sealed by Sylvanus Bourne, U.S. consul at Amsterdam, for passage to France, 1807 Aug. 8. Letters received (in folder 2) include those from Samuel Palmer, William Smith, John Hurford Stone, Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford (1806 Nov. 21, inviting Buckminster to dinner and describing the controversy at the French Academy over the reception for Cardinal Maury), William Wilberforce, and Helen Maria Williams. Letters received (in folder 3) include those from David Dickson, Thomas Brown, Dugald Stewart (partial letter), Robert Anderson (2 letters), Thomas Belsham, James Ingram (1807 July 7, thanking Buckminster for a copy of "Mr. [Noah?] Webster's work," making a lengthy and positive appraisal of it), J.B. Elwyn for "Mr. Pinney" (1807 July 11, permission has been obtained to visit Lord Spencer's library), Thomas Jervis (1807 July 18, about obtaining books and pamphlets for each other), and Thomas Rees. Miscellaneous material (folder 4) includes lecture tickets for the Athénée de Paris and the Athénée des Etrangeres and a summons for Buckminster to appear as witness at the Cour de Justice Criminelle, Paris, 1807 Jan. 21.

Writing to "my dear friend," Lee thanks Lowell for his recollections of her father and brother, Lowell's Harvard classmate, Joseph Stevens Buckminster. Most of the letter concerns a romantic disappointment in the life of her father, Joseph Buckminster. Buckminster had been engaged to marry Elizabeth Whitman, who ended the relationship because of her preference for Pierpont Edwards. Unmarried, she delivers Edwards' child in a roadside inn and then kills herself, the story forming the basis for Hannah Foster's novel, The Coquette. Lee writes: "I am aware that the 'Coquette' was founded upon the incidents which my father was connected. I believe it has been more read than any other American novel..."

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

This collection contains five handwritten essays composed by Joseph Stevens Buckminster (1784-1812; Harvard AB 1800) when he was an undergraduate at Harvard College in 1798 and 1799. Buckminster, an influential Unitarian minister of the Brattle Street Church in Cambridge, was instrumental in disseminating German biblical criticism in New England. Buckminster's student essays follow a format typical for late 18th century Harvard undergraduate essays and delve into themes of greed, the role of the arts in human refinement, conscience, and the ills of procrastination. The compositions provide a resource for studying the academic life of Harvard undergraduates in the 18th century, and they offer information on the subjects and styles of student themes and orations.

The Buckminster papers are divided into three series: personal papers, student papers and sermons. Personal papers include journals begun as a student at Harvard, 1797, discussing lectures, books read, and outlining his course of study generally. The journals continue with a description of his trip to Europe, 1806-7, which was necessitated by poor health. These descriptive passages are amplified with essays on the character of the English, French and German people. During his tour Buckminster amassed a personal library of some three thousand volumes; his bibliographical notes form an important part of this series. Most of these books eventually went to form the nucleus of the Boston Athenaeum collection. Correspondence includes copies of outgoing letters as well as letters received, on such subjects as dueling, capital punishment and the system of education at Eton College. Correspondents include James Sullivan, Arthur Maynard Walter, Thomas Belsham and John Pickering. Papers from Buckminster's years at Harvard include essays on classical literature and the Bible, and chronologies. Sermons form the bulk of the collection, and date from 1803-12. For part of this time Buckminster served as minister of the Brattle Street Church in Boston. As an original member of the Anthology Society and a founder of the Boston Athenaeum, Buckminster made important contributions to intellectual life in Boston during the first decade of the 19th century. His papers reflect his broad religious knowledge and the sort of restless intelligence which enabled him to accomplish much during his short life.
