Clark (1837- ) who lived in White Pigeon, St. Joseph County (Mich.) was the son of Mary E. (d. 1867?) and Robert Clark, Jr. (d. 1837). His father was a Deputy U.S. land surveyor. John grew up in Michigan and moved with his mother and brother to a dairy farm on Clark St., Cook County (Ill.), outside of Chicago in 1849. The dairy farm made them quite wealthy. John was an engineer, surveyor, and leading merchant of the area. In 1889 he was appointed to the position of Collector of Customs for the Port of Chicago, a position he held, 1890-1892.
