Henry Emil Bonitz (1872-1921) was a graduate of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1893. The Henry Emil Bonitz Papers contains copies of a 1948 letter from Bonitz's son, John H. Bonitz to J. W. Harrelson and Harrelson's reply. The collection also includes receipts for board at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), which Henry Emil Bonitz paid in 1889 and 1890.

Collection includes correspondence, administrative files, legal files, logging records, photographs, and negatives, dating from 1869 - 2013. This collection documents the successful efforts of the North Carolina Forestry Foundation to acquire forest lands for North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) for demonstration, teaching, and research while at the same time operating the forest on a profitable basis. Julius V. Hofmann to set up the forestry program at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1929, one of his immediate goals was to acquire some forestland for laboratory, research, and demonstration purposes. Unable to secure funding from the university or the state of North Carolina, Hofmann determined the only recourse was to purchase the land on a self-liquidating basis. He and some of the college trustees incorporated the North Carolina Forestry Foundation on April 15, 1929, to manage and develop the Poole Woods, a 74.94 acre tract in Wake County, North Carolina, and the first forest obtained by the Foundation. Other properties the foundation has overseen include Hill Forest, Maclean Forest, and Hofmann Forest.

Financial and grant records are also included. Foundry The origins of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering lie in the Departments of Geology and Mineral Industries Engineering. Only in 1972 did the University create a discrete Materials Engineering Department, which became the Materials Science and Engineering Department in 1986.

Photographs related to military training and education at North Carolina State University and the military service of people associated with N.C. State University. Established as a land-grant state college, North Carolina State University was required by law to include military training and education in its curriculum. N.C. State University's Department of Military Science and Tactics was introduced in 1894 under the direction of United States Navy Lieutenant Richard Henderson. Following World War I, the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps became the accepted method through which N.C. State, like other land-grant institutions, provided military training and education.

Topics include the consolidation of the University of North Carolina, post-World War II veteran enrollment, the design and and construction of the nuclear reactor on NC State's campus, and other general history of the campus during the time period of these records, 1933-1953. John William Harrelson was born in 1885 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts [later, North Carolina State University] and graduated in 1909 with a B.A. in Engineering. He earned a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the College in 1915. Harrelson was selected to head North Carolina State College in 1934 under the new title of Dean of Administration. His title changed to Chancellor in 1945, and he served that position until 1953. During his leadership, Harrelson participated in the consolidation of North Carolina's institutions of higher education. With the advent of World War II, military training played an expanding role at NC State. After 1945, the College saw expanded growth with the establishment of the School of Design and the School of Forestry, as well as the construction of a nuclear reactor. Harrelson died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1955.
