Title: Guide to the Louis Weinstock Papers and Photographs, circa 1910-1994

Louis Weinstock was born in Hungary in 1903 and emigrated to the United States in 1923. He settled in New York City and in 1925 joined the Painters’ Union, Local 499. Weinstock became one of the leaders of the “Rank and File” movement in District Council 9 of the International Painters and Paperhangers. He fought for Social Security and initiated the drive for unemployment insurance. Weinstock also led the Rank-and-File painters caucus in a fight against corruption in the union, defeating the corrupt leadership of the infamous Lepke-Gurrah racketeer gang and getting elected to the office of Secretary-Treasurer. In 1951, he was charged with conspiring to violate the Smith Act while teaching a trade union class; he was found guilty and sentenced to three years in jail. Weinstock retired from the union in 1963 and died in 1994 from heart failure.

Title: Maine Women Writers Collection administration records, 1959-2010.

The administrative records of the Maine Women Writers Collection's history are paramount to appreciating the origins, scope and value of the collection material. Most significant among the multiple boxes of records are those that document how and from whom the collection material came together. The development of the facility can be traced through the early Advisory Committee's reports and those written by the multiple curators in addition to the many published articles in various newspapers and periodicals. The style of the first curators was to use correspondence as a means of record-keeping. Thus, mining the various correspondence files throughout the entire collection will provide detailed specifics as well as background color. From the 1990s forward, a more formal record-keeping approach used by curators will permit a more targeted approach to research--ie. deed of gift forms and researcher registration forms. However, what is most valuable in the Administrative Collection is the depth of information related to collection material which broadens out to include biographical data, critical analysis, and historical context related to individual writers. Much of the information is not available in other sources.
