The papers of Silas Hathaway consist primarily of correspondence relating to land speculation. A noted real estate magnate, many of Hathaway's papers are concerned with deciphering who owned specific land rights, and include court documents where Hathaway acts as plaintiff, defendant, and witness to various land disputes. For many years Hathaway was involved in a land suit against Heman Allen (whose papers are in the Stevens Collection), which at one point landed Hathaway in jail. Some material relating to the case can be found in this collection, and printed remarks of both parties and their lawyers can be found at the Vermont Historical Society (and possible other Vermont repositories as well). There are several chronological gaps in the papers - it is not known if these papers were lost in the 1911 New York State Capitol fire, or were never collected.
