This collection of letters, for the period 1844 through 1850, describes the Sawyer brother's lives and activities as written to their country cousin, William Carr. Their lively letters describe their efforts at 'improvement', desire for education, attendance at lyceum lectures, membership in temperance lodges, membership in the Manchester Athenaeum, and other social activities.The letters prove to be an excellent look at the lives of young working men in the early days of the industrial era in New Hampshire.

Title: Letters received, 1868.

Collection consists of a letter from Mary Howard Schoolcraft complaining about life in Washington D.C., and a letter from Charles Sumner commenting on the Senate trial of Andrew Johnson. Also included are two letters conveying the collection to the Athenaeum from Joseph D. Sawyer, Wiggin's son-in-law, and a writ from York, England, dated 1623/4.
