Correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, memorabilia and printed materials primarily concerning biochemistry. Correspondents include 20 Nobel Prize winners, including Otto Meyerhof, Archibald Vivian Hill, Feodor Lynes, and Severo Ochoa. Other correspondents include Sir Hans Krebs, John Farquhar Fulton, Jean Pierre Changeux, and others in Europe, Israel, Japan, and the USSR as well as the USA. Nachmansohn's concern with the place of Jews in science appears throughout the collection, expecially in material concerning the Weismann Institute and other academic institutions to which he belonged. There are photographs of colleagues, many signed and inscribed during his many trips. The printed materials consist chiefly of Nachmanson's published works beginning with his 1927 doctoral dissertation (University of Berlin) and continuing throughout his professional life at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, 1926-30; the Sorbonne, 1933-39; Yale University, 1939-42; and Columbia University.

A pioneer biochemist, Carl Neuberg (1877-1956) spent over thirty years of his productive career as a professor at the University of Berlin (1903-1937) and as Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes of Biochemistry and Experimental Therapy. His varied research interests resulted in important contributions to the understanding of fermentation processes, solubility and transport phenomena in cells, the chemistry of carbohydrates, sugars, enzymes, and amino acids, and photochemistry. Neuberg was forced out of his position after the Nazi rise to power, and taking refuge in the United States. For the last several years of his life, he worked at New York University. The Neuberg collection consists of correspondence, lab notebooks, documents, photographs, and reprints, nearly all dating from after Neuberg's departure from Germany in 1940. The correspondence documents Neuberg's late-career work and the contacts he developed with American chemical manufacturers and industries involved in fermentation, as well as the burgeoning post-war relationship between scientific research and the federal dollar. Files for the American Cancer Society, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and the U.S. Public Health Service in particular contain useful information for study of the politics and mechanics of government grants.

The collection consists of correspondence, lab notebooks, documents, photographs, reprints. Most of the correspondence is post-1940, when Neuberg arrived in New York and made contact with American chemical manufacturers and industries involved in fermentation. A notable exception is the correspondence with Kurt Jacobsohn in Portugal, 1929-1956. There are many contacts with Japanese scientists, and significant involvement documented about the American Society of European Chemists, later the Carl Neuberg Society for International Scientific Relations. Scholars interested in the mechanics or politics of government grants will find of interest the American Cancer Society, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and the U.S. Public Health Service files. Contact with fellow Europeans, both those still in Europe and those who, like Neuberg, came to the U.S., remained important to him and can be seen in the correspondence.

This small but important collection documents a range of professional and personal activities of Otto Meyerhof. Letters represent the bulk of the collection and these are divided by topic. Letters from Otto Meyerhof to his son, Gottfried (George Geoffrey), written in English and German, are rich in the details of daily life including his professional interests as well as his travels through Europe as he fled Nazism. The correspondence with American and European scientist overlap somewhat and cover a range of issues. There is information and advice on scientific experiments as well as letters of recommendation for colleagues escaping Germany during World War II. Correspondents include E. Elisabeth Blencke, F.L. Breusch, Carl F. Cori, H.J. Deuticke, Marcel Dubuisson, Encyclopaedia Hebraica, Hermann O.L. Fischer, L. Genevois, Walter Guttmann, A. Szent Gyorgyi, Otto Hahn, A.V. Hill, W.
