Diary kept by James Eldridge of Hartford, Connecticut. He kept the diary during the Civil War, and added notes ca.1893-1898. According to the notes, Eldridge enlisted on 11 August 1862, was promoted to Corporal on 6 October 1862 and was again promoted, to Sergeant, on 10 November 1862. He received the rank of Second Lieutenant on 12 September 1864 and First Lieutenant on 19 March 1865. He joined the 23rd U. S. Colored Troops, with the rank of Second Lieutenant, in September 1864.

Eldridge's collection of letters, manuscripts, documents, printed military forms, autographs, ephemera, and approximately 4000 portraits and contemporary photographs. The collection documents military history of the Civil War, from both the Union and Confederate sides; concentrating on commanding officers, military and naval operations and administration, the armed forces of South Carolina and Virginia, and the everyday life of the common soldiers (including prisons and medical care). The bulk of the collection deals with the Civil War, although there is some material on the ante-bellum and post-war politics and military history, including the raid on Harpers Ferry and the post-war navy.

Letter concerns a piece of rope (attached) that was used to lower the body of John Brown into the grave after being convicted and hanged for leading the raid of abolitionists on Harpers Ferry Army Depot in 1859. The letter details the manner in which this piece of rope came in to Mr. Eldridge's possession.
