The collection consists of one bound volume used as a copy book by aides of General Chesnut during the time he served as commander of the reserves in South Carolina. There are copies of 528 letters written by James Chesnut and his aides Edward H. Barnwell and Isaac Hayne between May 26, 1864 and April 25, 1865. They concern the organization and duties of the reserve forces, including guarding prisoners. Troop movements and the invasion of South Carolina are also discussed.

Papers consist of legal documents, financial and estate records, correspondence, and other items. A group of papers (1865-1872) including insurance policies, receipts, tax returns, and a power of attorney, pertains to a house at 6 Lynch Street in Charleston (S.C.) and a plantation called Hillsboro located west of the Ashley River in St. Andrews Parish (S.C.). These properties were apparently part of the estate of Alexander H. Brown (Sr.?) and his wife and later belonged to Alexander H. Brown (1809-1879). Correspondence (1865-1878) of Alexander H. Brown mostly concerns legal matters and includes letters from Isaac Hayne regarding the dissolution of the law partnership of Isaac Hayne and Isaac W. Hayne. Financial records of Brown's law practice include a volume marked "Clients Accounts" (1867-1878) recording monies received and paid out on behalf of legal clients, and a receipt book (1867-1878). Papers also include bills, accounts, and correspondence (1871-1876) regarding claims against Bissell & Co. (for which Alexander H. Brown acted as assignee); correspondence (1870-1871) among William States Lee, Alexander H. Brown, Wilmot G. DeSaussure, and others regarding a trust estate and a bond, with related accounts; legal and financial documents (1869-1877) pertaining to a judgement against George W.S. Legare; estate records of William Nayler (or Naylor) and Hanker Enick Meisner; financial records of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island (S.C.); account statements and other papers (1869-1871) relating to bonds held by Alexander H. Brown and W.D. Porter; and accounts, letters, and other items relating to the case of Rusch v. Merker.
