Random House editorial files of Albert Erskine contain correspondence with staff and authors; editorial fact sheets and notes; copy for book covers; financial documents including contracts and royalty statements; copies of articles, speeches and manuscripts; photographs; and reviews, advertising schedules and publicity for book publications. The collection also contains some personal correspondence and miscellaneous Random House staff correspondence. The William Faulkner series includes articles about Faulkner; setting copy and proof for "As I lay dying"; copies of the 1984 edition of "The sound and the fury" with editorial notes; smaller files on several other novels; correspondence and editorial work with Faulkner scholars including Joseph Blotner, James B. Meriwether, Michael Millgate, and Noel Polk; and material regarding the Faulkner collection at the University of Virginia including copies of Randon House /Faulkner correspondence. Chiefly Meacham's correspondence (1920-75) with American literary figures, many of whom were in the Virginia Poetry Society. The collection also contains material on Ezra Pound, including an electrostatic copy of a poem "To a city sending him advertisements"; letters from Pound to Meacham; notes by Meacham regarding Pound's release taken from Archibald MacLeish's restricted papers in the Library of Congress; and Meacham's book, "The caged panther: Ezra Pound at St. Elizabeth's," 1967. The collection also contains sketches by Dorothy Pound, including two for Ezra Pound's "Cantos"; copies of poems inscribed to Meacham, articles and reprints sent to him, clippings and photographs. Papers, 1900-1903, of Ernest Francisco Fenollosa, include two notebooks pertaining to N*o drama, ca. 1900, transcribed by Dorothy Pound; a lecture, 1903, on landscape poetry and painting in Medieval China; and a transcript by Doroty Pound, 1965, of a notebook "The Chinese written character as a medium of literature." Henry J. Taylor was an economist, journalist, columnist, author, and ambassador. Born in Chicago in 1902, later a resident of Virginia, Henry J. Taylor began his career as a journalist and columnist. His articles describing his world travels during the two decades between the First and Second World Wars were collected in his first book, TIME RUNS OUT (1942). Mr. Taylor's other books included MEN IN MOTION (1943), MEN AND POWER (1946), AN AMERICAN SPEAKS HIS MIND (1957), a novel, THE BIG MAN (1964), and another collection of essays, MEN AND MOMENTS (1966). Mr. Taylor was U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, 1957-60, during Pres. Eisenhower's second term. Henry J. Taylor died in 1984. Consists of thirty radio talks by Henry J. Taylor, from his weekly program YOUR LAND AND MINE, from the period May 9, 1949 to March 20, 1950. The scripts are numbered #333 to 377, but lack nos. 334, 340-4, 348-9, 351-2, 364, 374-6. The program was sponsored by General Motors, and that organization is frequently mentioned in talks on economic themes, such as taxation. Other prominent topics include Communist subversion of the U.S. government, the concurrent Alger Hiss case, and international affairs, especially concerning the Soviet Union, China, and Europe.

Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.
