This collection consists entirely of photocopied materials from the Moreland-Spingarn Library's collections of Judge J. Waties Waring Materials. The correspondence series contains copies of letters from Septima Clark and Ruby Cornwell to Elizabeth Waring re national and local civil rights and election issues, the local NAACP, changing times and Clark's citizen education work for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, among other topics. Photocopies of legal proceedings including some from the Briggs versus Elliott law case fighting unequal school facilities for African Americans and some from the case of John Wrighten (with Thurgood Marshall as attorney) versus the Trustees of the University of South Carolina for his being denied entrance to the law school due to his race, and the unequal education a new law school for African Americans would provide.

Correspondence, memoranda, subject and project files, speeches and writings, transcripts of interviews and testimony, book drafts, minutes, reports, administrative, academic, and financial records, printed matter, and secondary background material. The bulk of the collection (1935-1990) relates to Clark's career as a psychologist and professor at the City College of New York, his contributions to the African American civil rights movement and equal educational opportunities, and his various consulting firms, especially Metropolitan Applied Research Center, a group he organized in New York, N.Y., to advocate for the urban poor and disadvantaged. Topics include the psychological effects of racial discrimination and segregation, school integration, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, riots in Harlem, New York, N.Y., the integration of public schools in Little Rock, Ark., and the work of psychologist Otto Klineberg. Clark's work with his wife, child psychologist Mamie Phipps Clark, with whom he founded the Northside Center for Child Development, New York, N.Y., is also documented. Other affiliations represented include Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited (HARYOU), Intergroup Committee on New York's Public Schools, Mid-century White House Conference on Children and Youth, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Child Labor Committee, National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students, Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. Also includes records of the Central Division, Brooklyn, N.Y., of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association (1922-1962). Correspondents include Gordon W. Allport, Hubert T. Delany, Alfred Lee McClung, Gardner Murphy, A. Philip Randolph, Louis L. Redding, and Elizabeth Avery Waring.

The Ethelyn Murray Parker collection consists of her early writings, correspondence, photocopied newspaper clippings from The Lighthouse and Informer and The Charleston Chronicle, with booklets, ephemera, awards and plaques, the majority of items consisting of photographs throughout various series. The correspondence series contains a letter from Josephine Pinckney (1947), letters (1949-1964) from The Chicago Defender and Afro-American Newspapers and The Pittsburgh Courier; and greeting cards and postcards (1927-1960, nd) from relatives and friends. The school related series contains Parker's unbound autograph book (1925) from Tuskegee Institute, with an inscription from principal Robert R. Morton; and numerous photographs of Parker, the campus and class mates. Also included are invitations, booklets and photographs (c.1920-1931) from Voorhees Institute, Denmark, S.C.; group photographs (1955) of faculty from Sanders-Clyde Elementary, Charleston; and one with Septima Clark at the "South Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers/ PTA Workshop." The National Council of Negro Women, National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, and S.C. Federation of Colored Women's Clubs series contain organizational materials, minutes, correspondence, newsletters, clippings, programs and photographs of Parker and notable S.C. women such as Mamie Garvin Fields, Albertha Murray, Sarah Dart Butler and others at various organizational meetings (1953-1968). With some data from The National Council of Negro Women re the Interracial Conference of Women (1956). The S.C. Federation of Women's Clubs materials contain financial reports, magazine articles, programs, and photographs (1940, 1957, 1963) re the Wilkinson Home for Girls; conference programs and photographs (1949, 1958-1966) from the Coastal District, and Elite Art and Social Club members. Central Baptist Church files (1951, 1962-64, 1972) include photographs, minutes and programs (1960, 63, 65-66) of the Women's Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of S.C. With many images (c. 1920-1960s) of Parker, her husband, relatives and friends, mostly unidentified. A photograph (c. 1899) of an African American soldiers (possibly Troop H, 9th Calvary) deployed for the Philippine Insurrection is included as well, along with photographs of Parker at the Highlander Center (c. 1950s), a photograph of Ella Baker, and group picture featuring Septima Clark and Guy Carawan. Photos (1954) taken by Boags Modern Arts Photo Studio (1954) are of the Charleston Chapter of the NAACP honoring Judge Julius Waites Waring; present are NAACP counsel Robert L. Carter, Elizabeth Waring, Septima Clark and Parker. With other images of Charleston's African American policemen, playing pool (1952), photos (1956) by Coards Studio of the opening of F. D.Ward Wilson Drug Store, and a variety of photos (c. 1920-1960) featuring many significant buildings in Charleston, and statues at Brookgreen Gardens. With some miscellaneous items.

Collection contains journals; personal and business correspondence; manuscripts of poetry, drama, and fiction; scrapbooks containing clippings of articles and columns by Willis; photos; and correspondence and clippings relating to her civil rights work. The journals are largely introspective, dealing with her family life, including the death of her only son in a motocycle accident, and her life as a writer, with very few references to her public activities. They begin with no. 36, the earlier 35 having been lost or destroyed; the collection includes both the manuscript originals and typed transcripts by Willis, some with editorial changes.

Includes correspondence of Waring and his second wife, Elizabeth Avery Waring, and writings, legal case files, organizational material, photographs, and seventy-two scrapbooks of clippings relating to Waring's career as a federal district judge (1942-1952), and to civil rights activities of the time; together with the transcript of an interview by Columbia University's Oral History Research Office and other biographical material. Persons represented include James Baldwin, Martin Luther King, Jr., Benjamin Mays, Carl T. Rowan, and John H. Wrighten. Organizations represented include the Ku Klux Klan (1915). Other topics represented include hate mail and equal pay for equal work.

Potts, John F. John Foster Potts, Sr. papers, 1885-2005 (bulk 1935-1991).

The papers are divided into numerous series. Biographical papers include an unpublished autobiography and material re Potts's service as a U.S. navy recruiter. Family papers include Potts's narrative history of the family, with some correspondence, clippings, ephemera and related matter. Materials re Potts's wife Muriel's family and their children include data on the Logan family, including notes re dismissing Dr. William Miller Logan from military service (c. 1917) for being African American; sheet music autographed by Langston Hughes and school and other papers re her teaching career, along with report cards, programs, etc. of the children; and some personal correspondence that includes thank you notes from Elizabeth Avery Waring. Potts family property papers detail ownership and use of land in East Flat Rock, N.C., putting it into the U.S. Soil Bank program and a tree conservation program. Also included is Potts's history of early black families in East Flat Rock, and his history of The Society of Necessity, a mutual aid society for African Americans, and The Kingdom of Happy Land, a community established by emancipated slaves from Mississippi, as well as papers re his service as a historian at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. Charleston, S.C. real estate papers document Potts's ownership and sale of two properties, one being 54 Montagu St., sold to Palmer College. Writings of Potts include speeches and articles on various educational, civil rights, religious and other topics, with many commencement speeches. Longer works include a draft of his master's thesis (1937) re growth of African American population in Gary, Ind., and drafts of his history of the Palmetto Education Association, along with notes on that organization and date re the Palmetto State Teacher Association, as well. School materials document Potts's education and teaching in secondary schools in Gary, Ind., Columbia, S.C., and Charleston, S.C. There is material, as well, re his directorship of Avery Institute, and his presidency of Voorhees School and Junior College (later Voorhees College), with some information on student unrest there (ca. 1969), employment of his wife Muriel, and loan of Edwin Augustus Harleston paintings. Other papers document his affiliation with the Triangle Association of Colleges of South Carolina and Georgia, the Moton College Service Bureau, and the Technical Assistance Consortium to Improve College Services (TACTICS), and other agencies for whom Potts consulted. Civic and social organization papers include materials re Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the Wolverine Social Club of Flat Rock, N.C. and some card clubs. Miscellaneous materials include plaques, awards, some photographs, newspapers, and printed matter.

The papers consist of transcripts of eight interviews conducted by Jack Bass and Walter De Vries in 1974 with prominent South Carolina public figures. These interviews, among others, were used for their book, The Transformation of Southern Politics: Social Change and Political Consequence since 1945. The entire group of interviews is housed at the University of North Carolina in the Southern Historical Collection Oral History Program. The papers are contained in one small series and consist of transcripts of interviews conducted in 1974 by Jack Bass and Walter De Vries with prominent South Carolina public figures. The overarching theme of the interviews is race relations and the effect of race on South Carolina politics. Those interviewed include Thomas R. Waring, Jr. (mentioning his uncle Julius Waties Waring and his wife Elizabeth Waring); Terrell Glenn; Maurice Bessinger; Gedney Howe, Sr. (also mentioning Judge and Mrs. Waring, Strom Thurmond, and James F. Byrnes); James Redfern (mentioning the Orangeburg Massacre); John West (mentioning the Ku Klux Klan); I.S. Leevy Johnson; and Julius S. Baggett.
