Coombs focuses primarily on the Colossus, ACE, and MOSAIC computers. He begins with his work as an engineer in the Post Office Research Establishment (PORE) in the late 1930s, where he joined Thomas H. Flowers in vacuum tube switching experiments. He compares their results with achievements they made during the war on the Colossus calculator. Based on his experience with the Colossus, Coombs was asked to join the National Physical Laboratory's ACE computer project. Coombs recalls Alan Turing's lectures on computing which he and William Chandler, a colleague from PORE, heard when they were beginning the project in 1947. He also describes the MOSAIC computer he and Chandler built for the Ministry of Supply in 1954.

Newman discusses his work at the Bletchley Park Government Code and Cipher School in Britain during World War II. He mentions his teaching position in mathematics at Cambridge University before the war, and his acquaintance there with Alan Turing while he formulated his theory of computability. At Bletchley Park, Newman worked on the decoding of machine-generated ciphers using the Colossus, an electronic calculator built under the direction of Thomas H. Flowers incorporating design features based on Turing's statistical theory. Newman discusses personal interactions and the operation of the Colossus. He also describes his post-war position at Manchester University, where he worked on the MARK I computer project before returning to teaching.

In Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas, the first jury of African Americans were called to Jury Duty in Jefferson County in more than 50 years in 1947. The African American professional and businessmen were called by Circuit Judge T.G. Parham at the request of defense attorney, W. Harold Flowers (pictured in center of article). A racially mixed panel was chosen to try Willie Wilkerson, 31, and his brother, Albert, 19, in the murder of two white men. The defendants were found guilty of lesser crimes. Of the 13 African Americans in the jury pool, three became part of the jury. The African American men called for jury duty are pictured: first row (from left to right) Ivey Anderson, A.B. Bedford, J.C. Kahn, Malvin E. Moore Sr., U.S. Brown, E.D. Peebles; second row David Davis, R.N. Chanay, L.A. Davis, Fayette Roberts, A.A. Mazique, and C.F. Colemen.

Flowers discusses the development of the Colossus electronic cryptanalytic machine beginning with his work for the British government in switching systems. As early as 1930, he says, he turned to vacuum tubes because of reliability problems with mechanical switching equipment. He describes the construction of a voice-frequency signalling system at the Post Office Research Establishment (PORE) from 1932 to 1935. At the beginning of World War II PORE directed its efforts to cryptanalysis, and Flowers' expertise in vacuum tube switching led him to a key role in the project. Flowers describes in detail his work with Colossus at the Bletchley Park Government Code and Cipher School, and his relationship with Alan Turing, one of the senior Bletchley Park scientists.
