The item is an ALS addressed to T. L. Smith, "Register of the Treasury" and signed by "C.B." It lists the railroad iron imported into Philadelphia prior to 1843 (all in the years 1837-1839), but not yet laid down. Most of the rails were earmarked for projects that had been forced to suspend in the depression of 1839-1843, among them the Norristown & Valley Railroad, the Williamsport & Elmira Railroad, the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad and the "Summit Railroad," by which is probably meant the railroad of the Summit Coal Company near Hazleton, Pa. The letter gives amounts of rail and duties paid.
