Lucille Lortel papers

Title: Lucille Lortel papers

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

The Railroad hour was a program which presented excerpts of famous musical comedies, as well as original stories, for radio audiences. Each half-hour episode of the program presented the highlights of one musical. Gordon MacRae was the host and leading man for each episode; his leading ladies came from radio and the Metropolitan Opera.

Sardi's (Restaurant) caricatures, 1927-1952?

Title: Sardi's (Restaurant) caricatures 1927-1952?

This collection contains some of the drawings that were displayed on the walls of Sardi's restaurant from the first drawing of Alex Gard to Don Bevan drawings of the early 1950s. The caricatures are predominately, but not exclusively, from the field of performing arts. This includes music, cinema, theater and dance and ranges from performers to press agents and managers to writers. A few people from outside the performing arts field, such as Al Capone and Helen Keller, are also represented. The common factor among all the objects of the caricatures is that they all must have eaten at Sardi's.

Don Sturkey Photographic Materials, 1951-2007, (bulk 1951-1989)

Title: Don Sturkey Photographic Materials, 1951-2007 (bulk 1951-1989)

Don Sturkey (b. 1931) retired as chief photographer of the in 1989 after 34 years. The native of Lincoln County, Ga., arrived at his profession by chance; Sturkey joined the United States Navy in 1948 and was assigned to shore duty in Washington. He repeatedly asked to be transferred, including to photography school, and in early 1950 he was granted this opportunity. Sturkey went on to be the first staff photographer at the and worked there for one summer. He attended Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, N.C., and joined the staff of the following college. Sturkey began working at the in November of 1955. Charlotte Observer Shelby Daily Star High Point Enterprise Charlotte Observer This collection comprises the photographic materials made by Don Sturkey from 1951 to 2007, the majority of which he produced in his capacity as staff photographer for the (1955-1989). Primarily depicted are local news and sports events covered by Sturkey. He captured numerous images portraying the tense racial climate of the time, including Ku Klux Klan meetings and rallies; blacks and whites picketing segregated establishments; a lottery drawing for school integration in the Charlotte and Mecklenburg County public schools; and Dorothy Counts, the first black student to attend Harding High School in Charlotte in 1957. Also included are many images of the civil rights leaders of the 1950s and 1960s, numerous North Carolina and United States politicians, famous musicians and entertainers, several NASA missions, and the construction of Walt Disney World in 1971.
