Letterbooks, correspondence, subject files, and scrapbooks comprise the bulk of the collection and primarily relate to Mahone's railroad and political interests in Virginia. Among the political topics highlighted are the Readjuster movement, which had as its central focus how to pay the state debt; Mahone's gubernatorial and senatorial campaigns' canvassing of voters before elections; requests for governmental positions particularly during the period Mahone was Senator, l881-l887; and the schism which developed in the Republican party in Virginia in the late l880s. Also information relating to Mahone's railroad, the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio, which became operational in 1870, and to railroad policies in general in Virginia. Political allies Mahone was able to cultivate are among the chief correspondents. They include Frank S. Blair, William E. Cameron, Abram Fulkerson, Harrison Holt Riddleberger, John S. Wise, Stith Bolling, and William Lamb.

The collection consists of the correspondence, 1896-1897, of William Lamb as state chairman of the Republican Party containing delegates' credentials, resolutions and newspaper clippings; a letterpress copybook, 1897-1898, kept by William Fanning Wickham as state chairman and James W. Tierney as secretary, including a copy of a letter from Wickham to President William McKinley, 1897, about the disputed chairmanship of the party in Virginia; and the 1897 correspondence of Tierney. Also included are an account book, 1897-1898, kept by Tierney for Wickham; accounts, 1897-1898, of Thomas Ashby Wickham and William Fanning Wickham; credentials, 1897, of delegates to the state convention; minutes of an 1897 meeting of Sixth District Republicans; resolutions, lists of voters, plan of organization; 1897 election returns and lists of Republicans. Several letters enclose Republican broadsides and pamphlets and reflect African-American participation.

Diaries, 1855, 1859-1861, 1864-1909, of William Lamb, written while a student at the College of William and Mary, newspaper editor, commander of Fort Fisher, coal merchant, member of the Board of Visitors and Rector of William and Mary. Collection also includes diary, 1861, and some letters of his wife Sarah Annie Chaffee Lamb as well as page proofs and other material relating to the publication of Letters from the Colonel's Lady (Winnabow, N.C., 1965). Two additions to the collection (1993.49 and Sm. Coll. Add. 13) include photographs of Mrs. William Lamb and daughter Sally Lamb, William Lamb, Jrs and Frances [?], speeches, pamphlets and illustrations as well as a scrapbook of newspaper clippings relating to the Battle of Fort Fisher and William Lamb.
