Include twenty-one notebooks kept by William Roane Aylett while a student at the University of Virginia, 1850-1854, together with nineteen speeches delivered to various student societies and an essay on University life. Family financial papers chiefly concern the settlement of Philip Aylett's estate, ca. 1852-1855, and Judith P. Aylett's guardianship of minor children. Also include two notebooks kept by William's son Philip at the Virginia Military Institute, 1884-1888; an undated notebook on mesozoic flora, perhaps kept by Professor W.M. Fontaine at the University of Virginia, 1879- 1910; three letters to Fontaine; and a series of clippings and comments on antebellum politics. Correspondents include Lester F. Ward of the United States Geological Survey and President W.W. Smith of Randolph-Macon College.

Aylett, a colonel in the 53rd Virginia hailing from King William County, Virginia, kept a diary spanning from May 1865 to May 1867, covering his time as a prisoner as Johnson's Island, Sandusky, Ohio. Hoge's diary covers the period from January 1882 to September 1884, during which he was a medical student at Heidelberg University in Germany.

Also includes papers, 1861-1862, relating to the command and supply of the 53rd Virginia Infantry. Also includes the correspondence, 1849-1867, of Patrick Henry Aylett (1825-1870), while serving as district attorney of the Confederate States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, concerning cases under his direction. Other family members represented in the collection include Philip Aylett (1791-1848) of "Montville," King William County, and Alice Roane Brockenbrough Aylett (d. 1895).

Chiefly business correspondence (1760-1776) relating to Jamieson's role as a resident partner of the firm Glassford, Gordon, Monteath & Co., of Glasgow, Scotland, and to various mercantile enterprises in North America and the West Indies, especially Antigua. Acting in behalf of John Glassford and James Gordon's commercial interests which included Jamieson, Campbell, Calvert & Co. distillery in Virginia, Jamieson was also involved in several aspects of Chesapeake business life, particularly in the trade of tobacco and lumber. Papers (1776-1783) concern Jamieson's shipping activities in behalf of the British armed forces in America after his flight to New York with John Murray Dunmore, colonial governor of Virginia. Includes business report (1786) of the Glasgow firm prepared for the Loyalist Claims Commissioners in Halifax and some correspondence of George Wythe, Robert Carter Nicholas, and James Glassford, Jamieson's business associates. These records contain letters and papers of William Aylett and Thomas Smith, state agents; receipts, 1776-1779; accounts and bills of lading, 1776-1779; and assistant state agent accounts and receipts, 1777-1779. Correspondence is chiefly concerning shipments to and from the West Indies, using the ports of St. Eustatius, Netherland Antilles, and St. Pierre, Martinique, major sources of supplies during the 18th century, and Nantes, France. Often mentioned is the firm of Van Bibber and Harrison, colonial agents. Tobacco, pork, and corn were sent to the West Indies, and tobacco and wheat to Europe. In return, the state agents were provided with French guns with bayonets, tent cloth, thread, blankets, medicines, etc. Payrolls for the ships crews list names. An affadavit from June 25, 1788, lists "all of the vessels under the direction of Thomas Smith, late commercial agent."
