The archive was organized during two periods of activity: by Burroughs in 1965, and then in 1972 by Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and Barry Miles, who divided the manuscripts and typescripts of Burroughs's works and notes into 169 collections of papers which they placed in consecutively numbered folders and portfolios of various sizes, which they called "Folios". Burroughs inscribed headings on the folders and sometimes also affixed collages to their front covers. In addition to manuscripts and typescripts, these folios include correspondence, clippings from magazines, photographs, exercise books, and cut-ups. The material relates to apomorphine, scientology, dreams, biofeedback and to the composition of Burroughs' Dream Diary, Soft Machine, Naked Lunch, The Wild Boys, Dead Fingers Talk, Nova Express, The Revised Boy Scout Manual and the Job. In addition to the 169 folios, the archive contains eleven files compiled by Burroughs and related to Scientology; 4 boxes of photographic files with approximately 1000 photographs, most of which were taken by Burroughs himself; and three boxes of audio material dating from 1960-1973. The archive also includes extensive correspondence to and from the author, written between 1955-1972, organized into 45 files. Correspondents include Paul Bowles, Mary Beach & Claude Pelieu, David Budd, Truman Capote, Gregory Corso, Brion Gysin, Allen Ginsberg, Rolf Gunter-Dienst, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Henri Ford, Timothy Leary, Jack Kerouac, David Prentice and Terry Southern; as well as noted publishers Dick Seaver and Barney Rossett of Grove Press and Maurice Girodias of Olympia Press. Barry Miles compiled a descriptive catalog of the papers, which was published as A Descriptive Catalog of the William S. Burroughs Archive (London: Covent Garden Press for Barry Miles Associates, William Burroughs, and Brion Gysin, 1973). Folios 1-169 as given in the Descriptive Catalog comprise the finding aid's Series I. Though the Catalogue places the Correspondence files first, the finding aid follows the archival practice of placing an author's correspondence after the works (here as Series III). In some instances, in order to maintain Burroughs's arrangement, correspondence which accompanied drafts of some works was not removed to the Correspondence Series. Scope notes will alert the researcher to their presence. The Scientology Files and Photographic Files (Series II and IV) follow as given in the Descriptive Catalog, but Series V., Audiovisual Material, was not documented in this volume.

The Yaddo Records contain the administrative records of The Corporation of Yaddo since its establishment in 1900, as well as the institutional records of Yaddo from 1926, the year Yaddo began accepting guests. Notable guests have included Newton Arvin, John Cheever, Aaron Copland, Malcom Cowley, Leonard Bernstein, Truman Capote, Carson McCullers, Langston Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Katherine Anne Porter, and Clyfford Still. The Yaddo Records also include the personal papers of Yaddo's principal founders, Spencer and Katrina Trask, and George Foster Peabody.

Creative works, correspondence, production material, and advertisement flyers document the publishing of the magazine Klactoveedsedsteen and editor Carl Weissner's relationships with a community of writers around the world. Materials span four issues of the magazine. Issue 2 is not represented. The bulk of the material consists of manuscripts submitted to Weissner for publication, but roughly half of these manuscripts were never published in Klacto. Manuscripts represent the work of Carol Bergé, Doug Blazek, Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Diane Di Prima, Larry Eigner, Allen Ginsberg, Dick Higgins, Gerard Malanga, Harold Norse, and several others. Letters from these writers commenting upon their work and the magazine are also included, several of which appeared in Klacto. A complete index of correspondents and works appears in the finding aid. Layout and production materials exist for two issues: pasteups and printing negatives for the cover and several pages of Issue 1; and pasteups and some original artwork that appeared in Issue 23 (5).

The Daisy Aldan Papers, 1946-1966, include correspondence, drafts, manuscripts, notes, layout dummies, paste-ups, galleys, page proofs, and photographs, as well as materials collected for publicity or publication. Aldan's editorial files for Folder Magazine of Literature and Art (1954-1955) and A New Folder: Americans--Poems and Drawings (1959) dominate the collection. Folder artists represented in this collection include John Ashbery, Lucia Dlugoszewski, Edward Field, Allen Ginsberg, Barbara Guest, Kenneth Koch, Willem and Elaine De Kooning, Denise Levertov, James Merrill, Frank O'Hara, Jackson Pollock, Larry Rivers, Ned Rorem, and Eve Triem. Manuscripts by Aldan and others are also present in the collection, including manuscripts for two of Aldan's published books of poetry, The Destruction of Cathedrals (1963) and Seven:Seven (1965). Also found here are materials for Aldan's translation of Stephane Mallarmé's A Throw of the Dice (1956, 1961). Aldan's correspondence, 1946-1966, mainly reflects editorial duties and requests to a wide variety of people in the musical, literary, and art worlds. Correspondence from such writers as Gregory Corso, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, Ned Rorem, James Schuyler, Eve Triem, and Eugene Walter is of a more personal nature and often discusses details of their work in a more informal context. George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Comprises typescripts of 14 original poems, some signed, as well as typescript translations of 29 poems from The Roman Sonnets of Guiseppi Gioacchino Belli and four poems by Catullus. The translations of the Belli poems were to have been published in the Hudson Review in 1956, but finally came out in book form in 1960. Norse's preface to the Catullus translations indicates, "These poems have remained 'unofficial' for two thousand years. It is time for the 'iron curtain' of the Dark Ages of fake sanctity be lifted for the bleating Anglo-Saxon herd." Also includes a typescript with holograph corrections of Norse's The Golden Age of Ivor Winters, a review of Winters' article Problems for the Modern Critic of Literature, which appeared in the Hudson Review (vol.IX, no.3, Autumn 1956). It is not clear whether Norse's review was published.

Creative works dominate the records of Thorp Springs Press and include book-length drafts, typescripts, and page proofs. Manuscripts representthe work of Jon Bracker, Mark Chain, Morton Grinker, Judy Hogan, James Hoggard, Worden McDonald, Sheila Nickerson, Thomas Parkinson, Thomas Zigal, and others. Roughly half of the manuscripts remain unpublished. Letters from authors accompanying and commenting upon many of the manuscripts can be found in the author files, which also include revisions, works-in-progress, clippings, broadsides, a few contracts and photographs, and a small number of letters from other publishers, editors, and printers. Frequent correspondents were Joseph Bruchac, Gene Fowler, Len Fulton, Judy Hogan, Gene Nelson, and Sheila Nickerson. Subject files consist of materials regarding small presses and other topics peripherally related to the operation of Thorp Springs Press. The Foreman Family materials include clippings, creative works, and magazines reflecting Foreman's personal interests. Letters include a 1919 letter from Foreman's great-great aunt tracing their family lineage as well as routine letters from his parents and siblings. A file of correspondence and court records relating to the arrest of Foreman's brother, Donald, in 1976 is also included.

Papers of this American poet, consist of eleven TLS and two ALS to his editor at Macmillan about his book, The dancing beasts (1962). The letters were written while he travelled in France and Morocco and commenced soon after Morse's submission of the manuscript. Norse agonized over which poems to omit (one about his mother) and the correspondence also reveals Norse's frantic efforts to obtain information on his book's reviews, sales etc., folowing publication. Norse mentions Robert Graves and James Baldwin in his letters. Collection also includes typescripts of the two excised poems and a one-page report by B.L. Rosenthal.
