Travel journal originally begun to assist the future travels of his friends with information re mileage and taverns along various routes; Gilmor's narrative of his journey from Maryland to South Carolina also records detailed observations re the towns, landscapes, people, and Revolutionary War sites that he encountered on his journey. Entries describe his route through Virginia (Richmond and the state Capitol designed by Thomas Jefferson, and elsewhere); North Carolina (Roanoke Rapids, Louisburg, Raleigh, Averysborough); and South Carolina, where his route included descriptions of Camden, Stateburg, Manchester, Strawberry Ferry, and elsewhere prior to his arrival in Charleston, as well as features of the landscape, such as the Pee Dee River, various swamps, and the Santee Canal, "I gave up my plan of visiting the Eutaw Springs & the celebrated field of battle where my friend General Williams gained so much honor, and... set out for the Santee Canal, which... connects the Santee & Cooper rivers." Accounts of the rustic log cabins and frontier conditions he encountered in eastern North Carolina and South Carolina change upon his arrival in Camden, S.C., where he visited the comfortable home of Col. John Chesnut and toured his cotton plantation, after which he reflected upon the impact of short staple cotton and the cotton gin on the local economy, "The discovery of the cotton crop is but a new thing in Carolina & Georgia, & has within these fifteen years made the fortune of half the great landholders." In Charleston, he lodged with "Mrs. Smith, the only decent boarding house in the City," although his network of friends included Henry William De Saussure and Adam Gilchrist took him around and made introductions. On Sunday the 11th he went to church with DeSaussure and "heard Dr. Bewst. Dined with Mr. Gilchrist. In the evening came in to Drink wine several gentlemen, among whom were, Wm. Loughton Smith the celebrated member of Congress and Washington's administration & afterwards ambassador to Spain & Mr. Lowndes member of Congress, & very amiable man whose lady had sent me a pot of marmelade on hearing I was indisposed." The following Tuesday, his traveling companion from New York, Mr. Schermerhorn, joined him at the harbor where they viewed a ship of African slaves during what was to be the final year of legal importation, "rode to Ladson's Wharf to see the Guineamen & were shocked with the sight of 400 on board of one ship, all stowed away separately, in places which almost suffocated me." Mileage lists record overland distances between Baltimore and other cities, with names of available taverns and lodgings along the way; routes and cities mentioned include Charleston (S.C.), Savannah (Ga.), Philadelphia (Penn.), Boston (Mass.), and New York City and Albany (N.Y.); Gilmor also recorded mileagege from major cities to various hot springs resorts of the east coast: Ballstown Springs [Ballston Spa] in New York, as well as resorts in Pennsylvania and [West] Virginia; noting the impact of improved transportation routes, he includes a table of distances "From Baltimore to New York by the new turnpike from Trenton." Illustrations include a profile of Robert Gilmor (Imbert's Lithography, New York) pencil sketches of places Gilmor visited, including "View from Wharf's tavern near Baltimore," depicting a pastoral landscape of water and trees; a view of the Susquehanna River; and in Richmond, Va., he recorded both Thomas Jefferson's statehouse in the distance and in the foreground, a large, two-story building, 17 bays wide topped by a cupola, in a "View of the Capitol and Armory," dated 20 Dec. 1806.

Property records include conveyances; deeds to lots in Camden (S.C.) and land near or on the Wateree River in Kershaw District; leases; and plats of land in Kershaw and Sumter districts. Financial and business records include bonds; receipts; promissory notes; accounts for sales of flour, cotton, and other items; accounts of James Chesnut and John Chesnut with Kirkpatrick & Douglas (later John Kirkpatrick & Co.), John Cantey, and other individuals and businesses; a plantation account book (1815-1816); and medical accounts (1820-1832) of Dr. Edward H. Anderson with James Chesnut detailing medical services rendered to slaves and others. Estate records (1818-1835) of John Chesnut include accounts, legal documents, and other items. Correspondence mostly pertains to business and financial affairs and includes letters to James Chesnut from Kirkpatrick & Douglas regarding shipments of beef and pork, cotton prices, and other matters. Additional correspondence includes letters (1828-1830) to James Chesnut from David R. Williams at Society Hill (S.C.) discussing family matters, life in Camden (S.C.), the construction of a mill or factory, and other topics; letters (1833, 1836) from John Chesnut (1799-1839) to his brother James Chesnut, Jr. (1815-1885) mainly concerning the "political news of the day"; letters from James Chesnut, Sr. to James Chesnut, Jr. concerning the health of their slaves, nullification and other political issues, and other matters; letters (1838) from John L. Manning to James Chesnut, Jr. concerning personal and social matters; and a letter (1836) from John B. O'Neall to John Chesnut (1799-1839) regarding politics. Other items include affidavits (1834) of militia officers; John Chesnut's commission (1822) in the South Carolina militia; lists of voters (1842, 1846) for state legislative elections in Clarendon County (S.C.); a petition (c. 1844) requesting a public road for access to the Camden Branch of the South Carolina Railroad; legal documents, including powers of attorney; notes and a speech about banking laws (1834-1835); and the act of incorporation (c. 1840) for the Charleston Atlantic Steam Navigation Company.

Property records include land grants, deeds, plats, a list of land grants to James Michie, conveyances, leases, legal documents, and other material pertaining to plantations and other properties in Kershaw, Camden, Lexington, and Craven counties and elsewhere in South Carolina owned by Ely Kershaw, John Chesnut, and others. Business records of those of Kershaw & Company and its successors and branches in Camden, Cheraw, and Granby. These consist of accounts for bonds and notes and for sales of sugar, chocolate, rum, saltpeter, ribbon, cotton, and many other goods as well as slaves; invoices; receipts; bonds; promissory notes; legal documents, including powers of attorney; and business letters. Included are the articles of partnership (1764) for Joseph Kershaw, John Chesnut, Ely Kershaw, William Ancrum, and Aaron Loocock, merchants and factors at Charleston, Berkeley County, Camden, Rocky Mount, Chatham, and Craven County, doing business under the name of Kershaw & Co. in Charleston (S.C.) and other names elsewhere. Accounts include those of Kershaw & Co., Kershaw, Chesnut & Co., Kershaw, Boykin & Co., Zachariah Cantey & Co., Adam and William Tunno, MacBeth, Henry & Co., Jacob Shoemaker, and James Chesnut, son of John Chesnut. Estate records include accounts, letters, legal documents, and other material pertaining to the estate of Ely Kershaw, William Wyly, William Tate, Jasper Sutton (John Chesnut's stepfather), and others. Other entries include 24 Jan. 1794, "Gab[rie]l Manigault for pew rent in St. Michaels Church"; 14 June, charges to Panton Leslie & Co. for "wharfage drayage storage negro hire for beating and attending the skeens during the Embargo," [which the United States imposed in 1794 in retaliation for hostile acts in restraint of American trade by Great Britain].

Ancrum, William, ca. 1722-1808. Account book and letterbook, 1757-1782.

Title: Account book and letterbook, 1757-1782.

Single volume, bound in vellum, that contains both a letter book and financial accounts that reflect the financial impact of the American Revolution on this South Carolina businessman and planter. The letter book, 1776-1780 (169 letters), preserves communications with merchants in Camden, S.C., as well as plantation overseers, and others; the account book details Ancrum's personal expenses, 1776-1789. The earliest financial entries, 1757-1758, preserve mercantile accounts recorded by the original owners of the volume, the firm of Fesch & Guinard [Guignard], during the French and Indian War. As an absentee land owner, Ancrum directed much of his correspondence to overseers Marlow Pryor, Parker Quince, and Joshua Terrel. There are also letters to Joseph Kershaw (1727-1791) and John Chesnut (1743-1818), both merchants of Camden, S.C. Topics discussed include many aspects of slavery and plantation operations, including the health of slaves, shoes and clothing for slaves, runaway slaves, the purchase of slaves, the elevated prices of slaves during war time, the transport of crops and supplies between Charleston and Camden, and the economic implications of the American Revolution, including the need to plant cotton to provide homespun cloth for slave clothing. Ancrum's letters contain only occasional references to the military conflict, his comments relating chiefly to the economic implications of events. A letter of 15 July 1777 cites a problem in shipping salt which might be viewed "as a breach of the Embargo... & consequently subject a person to public Censure which few people would care to incur." Rice, salt, and indigo were under embargo during this time, and as a result William Ancrum was prohibited from selling much of his valuable indigo crop. Ancrum's correspondence refers also to events and conditions in Charleston, S.C. A letter of 28 Jan. 1778 relates details of the damage resulting from a fire on 15 Jan. 1778, which "has laid in Ruins the whole of Church street square to the [bay]...." A letter of 16 Feb. 1778 to Geo[rge] Hooper comments on the aftermath of the fire, "the consequences will be severely felt by many, it never would have happened in a worse period when the distress of many was already great, & no materials to be go to repair the losses... properly by rebuilding."
