Mabel Freeman La Far (ca. 1879-1947) was the wife of S. Branch La Far. She was an amateur historian, chiefly interested in genealogy and church history. She was one of the members of the committee in Savannah who promoted the FERA (Federal Emergency Relief Administration) workers of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in indexing the Savannah newspapers in the library of the Georgia Historical Society, abstracts of wills and marriage records in Chatham County, Georgia, etc. With Caroline Price Wilson, she abstracted and compiled Abstracts of Wills, Chatham County, Georgia, 1773-1817, published in 1936. She copies and indexed the early records of the First Baptist Church, Savannah, Georgia, typed and bound in three volumes. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a charter member of the Savannah Historical Research Association.

Mabel Freeman LaFar (1879-1947) was the daughter of Jacob Elbert and Olive Newton Freeman of Savannah, Georgia. She was married to Sanford Branch LaFar and had two daughters. She died 29 August 1947 in Savannah. LaFar was a historian and served as librarian of the Lachlan McIntosh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Savannah. She collaborated with Caroline Price Wilson and together they published in 1936, Abstracts of wills, Chatham County, Georgia (1773-1817) and in 1941 LaFar published The Baptist Church of Savannah, Georgia: history, records, and register. LaFar was a charter member of the Savannah Historical Research Association and supervised W.P.A. workers on the historical research project for a history of Chatham County, Georgia.

The churches included in the collection are Corinth Baptist Church, Screven County, Independent Presbyterian Church and First Baptist Church of Savannah. Also included is a manuscript copy of the Charleston, S.C. City Directory, 1849, and copies of Chatham County Court House Wills, 1773-1817. Also included is the Revolutionary pay roll, 1779. of Lt. Col. John McIntosh, 3rd Georgia Continental Battalion All except the correspondence and printed materials are copies of originals.
