Two volumes of clippings with occasional handwritten annotations compiled by Louis Manigault. Volume 1 (1851-1899) contains newspaper clippings of obituaries, marriage notices, and articles. The articles (with annotations) contain information about art and architecture, miniatures, Charleston (S.C.) events, S.C. history, and deaths of prominent state and national figures. Also includes ephemera, illustrations, and an index. Volume 2 (1868-1891) contains annotated newspaper clippings about Charleston (S.C.), receipts, ephemera, and a reproduction of J.B. Longacre's engraving of Joel R. Poinsett (p. 220). The volume also contains information (1875) about the 200th anniversary of St. Philip's [Episcopal] Church, Charleston (S.C.).

Three volumes contain George A. Hopley & Company records of sales and shipments of cotton, rice, and rosin shipped from Charleston (S.C.) to New York (N.Y), Wilmington (N.C.), Liverpool (England), and LeHavre (France). These shipping accounts are attributed to Louis Manigault and the Manigault family. Volume 1, "Shipments. 1865-1867"; volume 2 [1867-1868], "Shipments. G.A.H. & Co."; and volume 3 [1867-1869], "Shipments. G.A.H. & Co. No. 2." Many accounts provide detailed lists of expenses including those for insurance, freight, dock and town dues and entry fees, cartage, rent, bank commissions, brokerage fees, and other charges. The weights and prices of goods are frequently included. Indexes list the names of vessels, and the individuals and companies involved in transactions.

Papers primarily consist of correspondence, and include financial records and other items. Correspondence of Charles Izard Manigault and the Manigault family concern family matters, plantation affairs at Silk Hope and other plantations, business concerns, travel in America and Europe, politics, and other matters. Included are letters between the Manigaults and the related Heyward and Pringle families, and correspondence (1833-1862) of Charles Izard Manigault with Robert Habersham & Son, rice factors of Savannah, Ga. Other correspondents include Joseph Manigault, Arthur Middleton, Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809), Lewis Morris, Elizabeth Heyward Manigault, Gabriel Edward Manigault, James Coward (overseer of Silk Hope Plantation), and James Haynes (overseer of Gowrie Plantation on the Savannah River). There are also letters (1831-1832) from Petty Vaughn of London (England) regarding his purchase of portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Izard from Mrs. John Singleton Copley. A letterbook (1846-1848) of Charles Izard Manigault in Paris (France) contains copies of letters to Henry W. Conner, Louis Manigault, plantation overseers, and others concerning family, business, and plantation matters. Financial records include accounts of Charles Izard Manigault with Welles & Co. (Paris, France) and Robert Habersham & Son (Savannah, Ga.), and Manigault family household receipts.

Photographs, letters, and other original documents are pasted into thebook, including a miniature watercolor painting (p. 54) of Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809) by Joseph Wood (accompanied by a biographical note on Wood) and a satirical watercolor cartoon (p. 320) "drawn by G.M. [Gabriel Manigault] when a boy in 1770" depicting comical characters marching with weapons and fighting.

This collection consists of a typed transcription of plantation records from the Gowrie and East Hermitage Plantations, contained in one ledger. It is divided into eighteen sections: Gowrie and East Hermitage Plantations, may 1861-May 1862, May 1863-December 1864, which provide information on the local situation during the Civil War, as well as the conduct of slaves as war drew closer to the plantations; records for May 1862-May 1863, containing the annual report of plantation events of the year, including events of the war; rice lands planted on the Savannah and Ogeechee Rivers, 1860; the recount of Charles Manigault and his family's first visit to Gowrie and East Hermitage Plantations after the end of the war on March 22, 1867; Season of 1876, describing the disastrous result of the crop that year; plantation jottings, 1845, with various information relating to the running of a plantation and care of slaves; planting tables, 1850-1861 and 1876; and a list of slaves at Gowrie and Hermitage Plantations, April 1855-April 1856, April 1858-April 1861 (sections 9-18). Included are correspondence and business records. Also in the collection are four articles by James Clifton that concentrate on Charles Manigault's papers concerning rice cultivation in the South.

Genealogical information includes a genealogical table (n.d.) of the Fenwick family, notes on the Broughton family, and a "List of houses in the city of Charleston, So. Ca. given by Nathaniel Heyward Esquire to his family." Miscellaneous items include a copy of a history of Brinkburn Priory (Northumberland, England).

Papers consist of plantation journals, accounts, school papers, speeches, genealogical materials, and other items. Two plantation journals (1861-1873) for Silk Hope Plantation contains lists of workers, accounts with workers noting the amount of rice harvested, yearly reports on crops of rice and corn, lists of supplies purchased, and lists of clothing for slaves and workers. Account book (1874-1886) of Gabriel E. Manigault and his brother Louis Manigault concerns household expenses for groceries, sundry items, and wages for servants. There are also accounts (1885) of repairs made to Gabriel E. Manigault's house at 6 Gibbes Street in Charleston. Speeches concern subjects such as connoisseurship and painting. School papers include essays, poetry, and a geometry exercise. Other items include a list and catalog8563 family papers. of South Carolina portraits exhibited at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, Ga.; a list of miniatures painted by E.G. Malbone and Charles Fraser; drafts of an advertisement or article about the sale of a portrait by Madame Vigee-LeBrun; a lease agreement between the Carolina Art Association and Eleanor T. Wragg; an essay about Madeira wine and its consumption in South Carolina and Georgia; a petition (1882) to the U.S. Congress concerning a bust of Lafayette; instructions on playing a pedal harp; recipes; and clippings concerning wine and winemaking. Genealogical materials include notes on the Manigault and Heyward families, epitaphs of Horry family members, and a genealogical chart of Heyward and Manigault family connections.

The collection is chiefly plantation records of the Silk Hope (Berkeley District, S.C.) and the Gowrie and East Hermitage plantations (Argyle Island, Ga.). These volumes contain information on slaves (including, in volume 5, a photograph of a runaway slave), rice growing, market conditions, the weather, and other topics. Other items include papers of Charles Manigault, including a will and essays on slavery and other topics and a manuscript autobiography of Gabriel Edward Manigualt, detailing his studies in medical schools in Europe and at the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, and his Confederate army career; and an album, 1861-1868. There are also papers of Louis Manigault, containing letters, bits of a wartime diary, wartime clippings, and other papers related to his service as a Confederate surgeon and to Joseph Jones (1833-1896) under whom he served.
