Letters from Francis Fauquier to Charles Steuart and copies of Steuart's letters to Fauquier concerning the condition of Don Pedro Bermudez, second in command of the Spanish navy at Havana; describes incident of several officers, a lady and 116 Spanish soldiers and sailors forced by the condition of their ship to put in at Portsmouth, Va. where they were attacked by seamen from H.M.S. Arundel. Also, a letter from Don Francisco Bermudez, Don Pedro's son and a narrative of the "Spanish Affair" signed by Steuart.

The Papers, which contain bonds, will, etc., have been arranged in chronological order, and each has been indexed. The bulk of the papers consist of letters of attorney by various customs officials. Personal and official correspondence of Charles Steuart, including his personal accounts. The personal correspondence is largely with his sister, Mrs. Cecilia Ruddach, Kirkwall, Orkney, and his brother James Steuart, an Edinburgh writer. It also includes letters from his nephews Tomas Ruddach, merchant in Tobago, Charles Ruddach, merchant in Grenada, Alexander Ruddach, who served for a time in the Navy, and William Steuart, who was assistant resident at the Court of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Portions of his correspondence have been printed in: A. Francis Steuart, Orkney News from the Letter-Bag of Mr. Charles Steuart; and in A. Francis Steuart (ed.), "Letters from the Nizam's Camp, 1791-1794" in the Asiatic Quarterly Review (July, (1912). The official correspondence is mostly with customs officials, and especially with Nathaniel Coffin, Steuart's deputy in Boston, MA. There are also letters from American Loyalists, mostly from Norfolk, VA. Mss. 5025-5039 are arranged in one chronological order; Mss. 5040-5041, in a separate chronological order, consist of additional material received after the bulk of the collection had been cataloged.
