Title: New Orleans Review Collection, 1968-1980, bulk 1970-1978.

The New Orleans Review Collection has been arranged into seven series based on types of material: Correspondence; Copy; History of the New Orleans Review; Toole Manuscript; Miscellaneous; Printed Material; Photographic Material. In addition, Series II (Copy) and Series V (Miscellaneous) have been divided into sub-series. Material in this collection dates between 1968 and 1980--mainly between 1970 and 1978. The most valuable material is found in the Correspondence and the Copy series and in the Minutes subseries of Series V. Correspondence and minutes document the staff's functioning. Exchanges between staff and contributors is also found in the correspondence. The Copy series follows the author's manuscript through the editing process. Researchers may with to consult issues of the New Orleans Review. These are located both in the Department of Special Collections and Archives and in the University Library's Serials Collection.

Correspondence with editors, publishers, friends, and family members; letters, diaries, photographs, and other materials from Young's experiences in the Vietnam War and about Vietnam; and items relating to Young's writings, especially "Two of the Missing" (1975), about journalists Dana Stone and Sean Flynn, who disappeared in Vietnam, and "A Killing Cure" (1985), about co-writer Evelyn Walker's malpractice suit about abusive psychotherapy. Included is correspondence with Jim Shumaker, editor of the Chapel Hill Weekly, about Vietnam; Allen Ginsberg in 1982 about a conference; Terry Sanford; Judy Loeb; poet Robert VanderMolen; Hannah Tillich; Robbie Robertson; Gloria Steinem about gender issues; Reynolds Price; writer Ron Dorfman; writer Ron Hollander; musician Casse Culver; photographer David Hume Kennerly; gay football player David Kopay, whose biography Young co-authored; writer Lewis H. Lapham; photographer Kenneth Maley; writer William Wright (Bill); writer Christopher Isherwood; Georgia congressman and actor Ben Jones; writer Rosemary Daniell; and a copy of an undated letter from Truman Capote congratulating Young on "Two of the Missing."

The collection consists of papers of David Bottoms from ca. 1970-1992. The papers include personal, literary, and business correspondence; manuscript drafts and notes in holograph, typescript, corrected typescript; galley proofs; and a transcript of an interview with Adrienne Bond on May 12 and June 2, 1987. Personal and literary correspondents include Jon Coppelman, Rosemary Daniell, James Dickey, Charles Levendosky, Laurence Lieberman, James Seay, and Robert Penn Warren, among others. The business correspondence includes letters from his literary agent, senior editor, Peachtree Publishers, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, Academy of American Poets, and various literary publications.
