Author, explorer, artist, and librarian.
Charles Lanman (1819-1895), a writer, amateur explorer, and an artist, was born in Monroe, Michigan, and educated in the Eastern United States. As a young man of 15, he was employed by an East India mercantile company in New York. It was at this time that he began to explore the more inaccessible parts of the eastern seaboard, often by canoe. The sketches, essays and letters he published about his adventures drew attention on both sides of the Atlantic and most notably, from American author Washington Irving who described Mr. Lanman as "the picturesque explorer of our country." In the mid-1840s, Lanman published Essays for Summer Hours and Letters from a Landscape Painter before becoming the editor of several newspapers. For the next several years, he continued to publish magazine articles of his exploration of the Great Lakes, Mississippi Valley, and the St. Lawrence River, some of which were contained in the reprinted Adventures in the Wilds of America, published in London in 1854. In 1849 he became librarian of the War Department in Washington, resigning in 1850 to become private secretary to Daniel Webster. That association produced his Private Life of Daniel Webster published in 1852. In 1859, he first published The Dictionary of the United States Congress which was revised regularly and later published by Congress as The Biographical Directory of the American Congress. He was appointed librarian of the House of Representatives in 1861. From 1871-1882, he was the American secretary of the Japanese delegation and in the following year, edited the book, The Japanese in America. The remainder of his days were spent writing and painting in Georgetown, having written 32 works in all.
Born in Monroe, Mich. June 14, 1819 at the age of 10 sent to Norwich, Conn. for an academic education. Title:
Papers of William Gilmore Simms [manuscript], 1839-1870.
The papers contain manuscripts of three poems by Simms : "The day after," "Dusk," and "Stanzas, written to a friend in despondency." Letters to publishers, authors and friends concern his writings and details of their publication, his home "Woodlands" at Midway, S.C., his life, and the works of others, including John Pendleton Kennedy, Peter Force, Charles Warren Stoddard, Elizabeth Ellet, George Munro, John Russell, and John Esten Cooke, and briefly Cornelius Mathews and Evert A. Duyckinck. Several letters introduce authors to publishers. Others are to autograph collectors. Letters discuss Simms' passion for the South and Southern literature as compared to the North and Northern literature. He offers both encouragement and criticism to writers and editors, and as the editor of several Southern periodicals he writes to obtain reviews and articles. Simms writes of his ill health, yellow fever in Charleston, S.C., his need for writing projects to support his family, and his efforts to publicize his books and the books of others including John Esten Cooke's "Wearing of the Gray." An autograph of Simms and three engravings are included.

Title:
William Sidney Mount papers, 1833-1868.
Correspondence and papers, 1833-1868. Most of the letters are related to his work as an artist - more than one letter discusses portrait painting - though there are some personal and family letters. The collection includes some copies of Mount's own letters. There is a group of thirty letters to and from Charles Lanman, including one from Mount's brother, Shepard A. Mount. A letter from Josiah D. Canning suggests one of his poems as a subject for a painting. There are a few sketches, including one of Mount's 1867 painting "Politically Dead," with some discussion of responses to it, and miscellaneous notes on art and other subjects. There are also miscellaneous printed ephemera, tickets and invitations to art exhibitions, including one from Thomas Cole; certificates licensing Richard E. Mount to practice as a lawyer; a list of portraits painted by Mount; miscellaneous printed material about patents; clippings; and a tintype of a young woman.

Title:
William Waters Boyce papers, 1846-1864.
Letter, 26 Jan. 1846 (Winnsboro, S.C.), from Boyce, to Peter Della Torre (Charleston, S.C.), re his intent to run for the Office of State Reporter, and suggests that "if I could get a good support from the Low Country... I might be elected.... I don't know any one I feel more willing to apply to than yourself in Charleston.... I know your influence is very great and if it should not be inconsistent with any engagements on your part I shall feel under obligations to you for any kindness you may be able to afford me....I write you at this early day that you may not be committed by a previous application." Letter, 6 May 1858 (Washington, D.C.) to [Charles Lanman], providing an autobiographical sketch re his early life and education, mentioning that he fought two duels, explaining his political philosophy, "I wish the South to pursue a prudent and wise course, so as if possible, by acting in concert with the conservative section of the North, [to] protect the interests of the South," but advocating for secession of the South if that policy failed, and listing his opinions on other political questions. Letter, 31 Oct. 1864 (Beverly, Mississippi) from N.E. Johnston, expressing agreement with Boyce on his views expressed in a "letter to Mr. [Jefferson] Davis of 29 ultimo," favoring the need for the citizens of the Confederate states to "be correctly advised of the actual condition of our country... to save the liberty of their native land," remarking on responsibilities of editors and publishers, and possibility of peace overtures by the next president in the event of the defeat of Lincoln in the upcoming election in the United States. Correspondence, printed questionnaires, photographs, etc. providing biographical information about politicians from Maine for inclusion in Lanman's Dictionary of the United States Congress. Lanman appears to have sent out a circular in 1858 asking for basic biographical information to which members of Congress or their friends or relatives replied. His Dictionary was published in various editions between 1859 and 1869. The collection also contains a letter dated Oct. 1, 1828, to Samuel L. Southard, Secretary of the Navy, from John Anderson, congressman from Maine; and a letter dated Dec. 5, 1828, to Southard from Joseph Ferdinand Wingate, congressman from Maine. Both letters concern appointments of midshipmen. Another letter, dated Sept. 9, 1846, is from John Fairfield, U.S. Senator from Maine, to P.C. Johnson and concerns the appointment of Johnson's son as a midshipman.
