The administrative records of the Office of University Librarian during the tenure of Donald F. Cameron consists of annual reports, meeting minutes, and correspondence of a professional and, less often, personal nature. The annual reports series provides a yearly progress report on library activity. Financial matters are contained in the series on budgets and financial records. One can view the day-to-day activities of the University Librarian through the general correspondence files, which are arranged alphabetically by sender or recipient of each letter. The bulk of the records are contained in the subject files. Within these files is documentation of Cameron's leadership of the Rutgers library system. Included are topics both internal to the operations of gthe library and external subjects that concerned Cameron, including professional organizations, associations and committees in which he participated. The records also contain extensive documentation on library construction on the New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden campuses of Rutgers. The final series documents Cameron involvement in the origins and development of the Rutgers University Press and Press Council.

Title: Academic freedom cases records, 1942-1958 (bulk 1952-1953).

Statements of the University Administration, correspondence, press releases, clippings, editorial analyses, biogrpahical information, and faculty committee reports (bulk 1952-1953) regarding the cases of University professors Heimlich, Finley, and Glasser, who invoked the Fifth Amendment in refusal to testify before Congressional Committees regarding questions about Communist Party affiliations and subsequently were dismissed or resigned. Faculty Committee reports include those of a Special Faculty Committee of Review, which advised on the Heimlich-Finley cases, and the Faculty Committee of Review of the School of Law, to which the Glasser case was referred for review and recommendation for further action. Jones created these committees following the recommendation of the Trustee-Faculty-Alumni Committee of Review, appointed by Jones and chaired by Trustee Tracy S. Voorhees, that the professor's refusal to testify raised a question as to their fitness as teachers. Documentation also includes confidential correspondence from Finley to University Dean Herbert P. Woodward refuting the 1951 claims of former Communists Karl August Wittfogel and. William Martin Canning accusing him of being a Communist before a Congressional subcommittee; a letter to the Harvard Crimson from Harvard Law School Professors Zechariaha Chaffee, Jr. and Arthur R. Sutherland stressing the obligations of a citizen to testify before Congress; a copy of the Congressional Record which records James C. Auchincloss, representative of the Third Congressional District of New Jersey reading before Congress Jones' statement Academic Freedom and Civic Responsibility. Includes biographical and professional information on the professors; materials including newspaper articles, editorials, and correspondence relating to the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and Association of American Law Schools (AALS) regarding their censure of Rutgers; and correspondence with other colleges and universities, various organizations, and individuals regarding requests for documentation on the cases.

The administrative records in this collection document the activities of the Office of University Librarian under the leadership of Donald F. Cameron. Not only does it outline the regular operations of the office, but it also records the multitude of activites that Cameron partook in as the University Librarian. The Annual Reports of the Librarian of the University relate the activities of the library as a whole, its departments, and its units and were issued for accountability purposes. The Budget and Financial records include letters and memos on budgetary matters, budget sheets, salary rates, accountings of endowments, and financial statistics. The General Correspondence series mainly consists of letters, the majority of which document the mundane matters of Cameron's everyday work. Within the Subject Files is documentation of Cameron's leadership of the Rutgers Libraries. The Library Buildings series documents the planning and construction of many Rutgers University libraries, which were overseen by Cameron.

Charles Lewis Beach attended the University of Wisconsin. He served on the faculty of the Storrs Agricultural College and Connecticut Agricultural College as an instructor in Dairy Husbandry (1894-1904). After serving in a similar position at the University of Vermont, Beach returned to the College as its fourth president in 1908. Beach Hall was dedicated in his honor in 1929 a year after his retirement from the college. Charles Lewis Beach died 15 September 1933.

Homer Daniels Babbidge was born in 1925 in Weston, Massachusetts, and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University in 1945 with a degree in political science and subsequently earned his master's and doctorate from the same institution. Babbidge became president of the University of Connecticut in 1962 and remained in the office until his retirement in 1972. His years at UConn were among the most productive, and the most turbulent, in the University's history. Homer D. Babbidge died in 1984.
