The records of the Charitable Irish Society of Boston consist of the archives of the Society for the 200 years from its founding in 1737. Among the papers is the Society's earliest record book, 1737-1804, containing the constitution and by-laws, rules and orders, list of members, and miscellaneous financial transactions. Later volumes, 1804-1937, include minutes of monthly and annual meetings, committee reports, membership lists, memoirs of deceased members, and treasurer's accounts. (Cont.) There are 30 boxes of correspondence relating to Society functions, finances, meetings, and membership, together with printed notices, menus, transcripts of speeches, and copies of the Society's history. Other items of note include records of the Roman Catholic Youth's Society, 1831-1842; a collection of memorabilia; a manuscript Gaelic dictionary; reports and correspondence concerning the Society's interest in 19th and 20th century immigration to Massachusetts; the March 18, 1912 visit of President Taft to Boston; and information on prominent members such as Robert Auchmuty, Patrick A. Collins, James Michael Curley, Patrick Donohoe, John F. Fitzgerald, James McGee, Daniel Malcolm, Hugh O'Brien, John C. Park and Peter Pelham.

Correspondence and other papers relating to Higginson's investments, philanthropic interests and political interests. Investments in which Mr. Higginson was interested, and for which there are records, include: Ecuador Coal Company, Gage Company, Ecuador Trading Company, Cherry River Land Association, Reynolds Chocolate Company, New Metals Process Associates, Jones Step Process Trust, John T. Jones Holding Company, Burn-Boston Battery, Submarine Signal Company, Standard Lessee Corporation, Standard Alcohol Company, St. Louis Cable and Western Railway Company, and St. Louis and Suburban Railway Company. Higginson's interests in Harvard, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Carnegie Institute, and in properties such as Sheldon Farm and Split Rock Forest are also represented. Business correspondents include Alexander Agassiz, Charles Fairchild, John M. Forbes, Henry Lee, Charles E. Perkins, Samuel G. Ward, and Charles W. Wetmore; political correspondents include Henry Cabot Lodge, James M. Curley, John F. Fitzgerald, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Howard Taft. A ledger and journal, 1856-1865, of James J. Higginson; an account book, 1799, of Salisbury and Higginson; and various estate papers and family correspondence are also in the collection.

Putnam, William Lowell, Mrs., 1892-1935. Papers, 1887-1935 (inclusive).

Title: Papers, 1887-1935 (inclusive).

Correspondence, speeches, articles, letters to the editor, reports, bulletins, notes, radio broadcasts, and clippings thoroughly document Putnam's work in maternal and infant health care and conservative politics. Included are pamphlets, programs, flyers, and other printed material of the many organizations in which she was active, the largest section concerning her work for milk inspection and purity laws. The collection also contains some of Putnam's published and unpublished political writings, and correspondence with publishers and readers about her poetry and prose. There is almost no family correspondence.

Records of the Good Government Association (GGA), 1900-1936, created to "arouse in the citizens of Boston a sense of political duty and aid the voters in a practical way to secure the election of aggressively honest and capable men." Records include reports made about prospective politicians such as James Curley, Calvin Coolidge, Martin Lomasney, Patrick Collins, and John F. Fitzgerald; investigations into the management of budgets and contracts relating to municipal infrastructure projects in Boston; inspection of the city budget and the activities of the Finance Commission; and promotion of the 1909 revision to Boston’s City Charter. Also includes GGA correspondence; membership records; financial statements, auditor’s reports, and cashbooks; publications and brochures; 45 scrapbooks; newspaper clippings; and individual candidate investigation files with clippings, correspondence, interviews, and campaign ephemera. Also, records of the Boston Charter Association; Carriage Bills, 1902-1914; and non-GGA printed materials.

Lomasney, Martin M., 1859-1933. Scrapbooks, 1902-1932

Title: Martin M. Lomasney scrapbooks [microfilm], 1902-1932.

Twenty-seven volumes of scrapbooks (numbered 8-34) kept by Martin M. Lomasney containing primarily newspaper clippings, political flyers, circular letters, palm cards, and sample ballots covering Lomasney's political career, city and state primaries, and elections. As an Irish democratic politician and boss of Boston's Ward 8, Lomasney served in various positions, including Boston's Board of Aldermen and the Massachusetts House and Senate. His real power came, however, from his involvement in the Hendricks Club, an organization he used to control the vote in his ward. The control of Ward 8 provided Lomasney with a disproportionate amount of influence in city and state politics. Included are materials pertaining to such figures as James Michael Curley and John F. "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald. The contents are arranged in rough chronological order.
