Title: Documenting the midwestern origins of the twentieth-century women's movement, 1987-1992.

Tape-recorded interviews and one transcript generated by an oral history project undertaken by graduate students in the University of Wisconsin Women's History Program under the direction of faculty member Gerda Lerner. The interviews document 22 of the outstanding midwestern leaders in the twentieth-century feminist movement and explore the connections between the women's movements of the 1920s and the 1960s. The interviewees include women active in labor, education, politics, religion, and business at local, state, national, and international levels.

Papers of Sister Joel Read concerning her experiences as a charter board member of the National Organization for Women from 1966 to 1967, and the organization of local chapters in Milwaukee and Madison, Wis. The papers consist of internal documents including action letters, agendas and minutes of meetings, notes taken by Read, constitutions and bylaws, correspondence, membership lists, memoranda, clippings, and press releases. Also included is a videotape, "For the Twentieth Anniversary of NOW," October 23, 1986, featuring Sister Joel Read, Sister Austin Doherty, and Catherine Conroy.
