The Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, formed in Pennsylvania during the 1840's moved to a West Seneca, N.Y. site in 1899. Steelmaking began in 1903 and by 1909 the City of Lackawanna had been established around the steel plant. Purchased by Bethlehem Steel in 1922, the facility expanded until employment reached over 20,000 in the mid - 1950's. Decline in the 1970's led to the closing of the Lackawanna Plant in 1983.
The Bethlehem Steel Corporation was the number two steel producer in the United States between 1916 and 1984. For a time it was also the largest shipbuilding firm in the world.
The Bethlehem Steel Corporation was incorporated in New Jersey on December 10, 1904, to effect the reorganization of the United States Shipbuilding Company of 1902. Bethlehem was a holding company whose purpose was to control the older Bethlehem Steel Company and a series of shipyards in Elizabeth, N.J., Wilmington, Del., and San Francisco, Calif.
The company was controlled by Charles M. Schwab until his death in 1939. In addition to steel ships, Bethlehem was a major producer of armor plate and ordnance and soon ranked on a par with Krupp, Armstrong's and the other big European munitions makers. It also pioneered in structural steel, manufacturing the rolled wide-flange columns and beams invented by Henry Grey.
Bethlehem grew rapidly by absorbing competitors. Its principal acquisitions were the Fore River Shipbuilding Company (1913), the Pennsylvania and Maryland Steel Companies (1916), the Lackawanna Steel Company (1922), and the Midvale Steel & Ordnance Company (1923). A second round of acquisitions, including the Pacific Coast Steel Company (1930), the McClintic-Marshall Corporation (1931) and the Kalman Steel Company (1931), expanded Bethlehem's reach into other areas of the country and strengthened its position in structural steel fabrication and as a supplier to the new manufacturers of consumer goods.
Like all domestic steel makers, Bethlehem was increasingly vulnerable to competition from non-union minimills and foreign producers, particularly after 1973. A drastic downsizing program between 1977 and 1990 temporarily eliminated massive annual losses. In the process, the company lost its number-two ranking, its fabrication and special product divisions, and its self-sufficiency in raw materials. Iron and steel production at the original Bethlehem site ceased in 1995, followed by the rolling mill in 1997 and the coke works in 1998. Bethlehem acquired the properties of Lukens Inc., a specialty plate manufacturer on May 29, 1998. With the end of the boom of the 1990s, Bethlehem filed for bankruptcy on October 15, 2002. The company's remaining assets were sold to International Steel Group Inc. on May 7, 2003.

Pettis, Andrew. Papers of Andrew Pettis, 1924-1972.
Title:
Andrew Pettis papers.
Andrew Pettis (1906-1987) joined the carpentry crew at a Portland, Maine, shipyard in 1939 and rose through the ranks to become shop steward and, when the yard unionized in 1942, president of Local 50 of the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America. Pettis became increasingly active in the union and in politics. He was named New England Regional Director of the IUMSWA in 1945 after an unsuccessful bid for election to Congress in 1944. In 1950 he was named vice president of the IUMSWA, a position he held until his election as president of the union in 1968. Pettis served as president for five years, until his retirement from the IUMSWA in 1973. Pettis' papers consist of labor agreements, business files, minutes from the local meetings, and correspondence. The bulk of the collection focuses on a nine year period (1942-1951) when Pettis headed Local 50 and served as New England Regional Director. A smaller portion of the collection deals with his years as vice president of the IUMSWA and provides information on shipbuilding nationwide and worldwide. For a detailed inventory of the Andrew Pettis papers, see the link under "External Documents" in the "Additional Description" section of this finding aid.

Title:
Administrative files 1973-1986.
These office files, 1973-1986, document the substantive actions of agency directors and deputy and assistant directors of the Dept. of Labor. These records constitute the official record of an agency's performance of its functions and formulation of policy and program initiatives and should be preserved at the appropriate administrative level. This series may include various types of records such as correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and reports concerning agency policy procedural precedents, organization, program development, and reviews as well as non-routine fiscal, budgetary, and personnel concerns. The series includes record types separately described in the administrative general schedule but the office filing methods and arrangement of these records in a central unified file justifies their identification and description in this manner. The correspondents are Mike Morgan and Bethlehem Steel Corporation, among others.

Connecticut Citizens Action Group Records., undated, 1964-2002
Title:
Connecticut Citizens Action Group Records. undated, 1964-2002
The Connecticut Citizen Action Group was the first state-based consumer interest group. Created in 1971 by Ralph Nader and directed by Toby Moffett, CCAG was designed to represent, inform, unite, and empower the citizens of Connecticut in their roles as consumers, workers, tax payers, and voters. Taking on such issues as illegal business practices, utility rate increases, environmental pollution, and consumer fraud, the newly formed group was inundated with citizen requests for information and counsel. Among its major activities and accomplishments are: the General Assembly Project, an in-depth analysis of the behavior of state legislators; the Health Project, which compiled a wide range of state health care information; organizing efforts to enact the Bottle Bill, which required deposits on many types of beverage containers; enforcing environmental standards and enacting consumer protection legislation; and watchdog oversight and legal action concerning utility companies and development projects.

Vulcan Iron Works. Records, 1884-1948.
Title:
Records, 1884-1948.
The records cover the peak period of Vulcan's production from 1905 to 1930, with slight coverage before and after. Locomotive order books (1903-1948) give customer name, shipping date and cylinder and driver dimensions with construction notes and occasional sketches of cylinders and other details. Locomotive specification cards (1902-1920) give full specification, customer and shipping data. Both are arranged by locomotive builder's number. The drawings (1892-1942) depict a wide range of the company's products and their component parts and are arragned according to product type. An incomplete selection of trade catalogs is also included. Additional items may be found in the library's general trade catalog collection. Series V-VII are photographic prints and negatives which are serviced by the Pictorial Collections Department. About half are standard builder's photos of locomotives, but they also include shots of shop interiors, employees at work, and locomotives and equipment installed and in service, particularly at collieries in the anthracite fields. There are also 1,658 negatives of drawings and plans, chiefly of mining equipment. The collection contains many gaps where the original negatives are missing or have deteriorated beyond use. (Many were on nitrate film.) An index to purchasers of the products is available in the Pictorial Collection Dept.

Title:
Juragua Iron Company mine photographs 1912-1914. 1912-1914.
The Juragua Iron Company was the first American company to become interested in iron mining in Cuba. The mines were located in the province of Santiago at the eastern end of Cuba. The Santiago province climate is hot but not affected by fevers or malaria. The company first went to Cuba in the early 1880s to begin iron ore mining. Its capital stock was controlled by the Bethlehem Iron Company of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Steel Company of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It shipped its first iron ore out of Cuba in 1884. This company was the most successful of all the American iron mining companies operating in Cuba in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. This collection of photographs illustrates in detail the mining operation as an open pit quarry process in the Sierra Maestre Mountains of southeastern Cuba.
