The first journal dates 1788-1794. The first part of this journal, February 1788- February 1792, is a financial account of each student's charges for attending Reverend Smith's private academy. The second part of this journal, January 1792-October 1794, is a chronological financial accounting of admission to Charleston College Academy which opened in October 1790. The second journal dates July 1788-October 1801 and is an account book of pew rents; sacrament funds; the rector's salary for St. Philip's Church; the Smith plantation; admission tuition, books, repairs, and teacher's salaries at Charleston College (College of Charleston); and donations to the Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans. The folder contains thirteen items concerning the debts due and the settlement of the estate of Dr. John P. Smith of St. Thomas Parish. His son, Livingston Smith, was appointed administrator of the estate.

Correspondence (1772-1788) of Penuel Bowen includes a letterbook fragment (1786-1788) containing drafts of his letters from Charleston (S.C.), Johns Island (S.C.), and Savannah (Ga.) to family members and clergymen. Correspondence concerns his attempts to obtain a parish post, the education of his children, his philosophy of education, the difficulties of raising his children while separated from his family, comparisons between the North and South, and other matters. Correspondence (1788-1795) of Susannah Barrett Bowen, widow of Penuel Bowen, concerns her husband's death, plans to return to Boston (Mass.), religious matters, her assistance from the Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of the Protestant Episcopal Clergy, and other matters. Included is a letter (1795) to her from Bishop Robert Smith concerning her son Nathaniel Bowen. Other correspondents include her brother Samuel Barrett and sister Anna Hill (both in Boston), and Nathaniel Russell of Charleston (S.C.).

Title: Sermons of Rev. Dr. Robert Smith, 1756-1801.

Approximately 265 sermons composed by the Rev. Dr. Smith and delivered in England; Charleston and other places in South Carolina; Savannah, GA; and Philadelphia, PA. Most of the sermons are annotated with dates indicating that they were used repeatedly between 1756 and 1801. Nearly all sermons begin with a Biblical quotation and citation and are otherwise untitled. The majority of the sermons were used about five times each, and one was used 24 times: "On the folly of delaying repentance" (roll 15). The other most used topics were: "I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever" (repeated 19 times; roll 21); "On the Duty of Trusting in God (17 times; roll 16); "By this shall all men know that ye are my diciples, if ye have love one to another" (16 times; roll 23); and "Oh that they were wise and consider their latter end" (16 times; roll 15). Several sermons relate to contemporary events. One was delivered before the House of Commons on 17 February 1775, during a day of fasting and humiliation in hopes of averting a crisis with Great Britain (roll 23); another followed the American victory at Sullivan's Island in 1776 (roll 15); another was delivered to raise funds for the Charleston Orphan House in 1791 (roll 18).
