Hermon Chapin established his firm in the Pine Meadow district of New Hartford, Connecticut in 1826. Originally partnered with Daniel Copeland, Chapin purchased Copeland's share of the firm in 1828, establishing the Union Factory. The company produced wooden planes and rules. Edward M. Chapin became superintendent of his father's firm in 1851. Along with his brothers George and Philip, Edward Chapin formed H. Chapin and Sons in 1860. Philip left the partnership in 1866 and the name changed to H. Chapin's Sons. George sold his interest to Edward in 1868. Edward continued the firm till his death in 1897. The collection includes Union Factory price books, inventories, account books, contracts, and cash books.

The papers of New Hartford, Connecticut, tool manufacturer Hermon Chapin. His firm changed names over the years, especially after being taken over by his sons. Among the papers are military commissions, business correspondence, account books from the firm's early days, law suits, mortgages and property deeds. Also includes a room-by-room inventory of the factory.

Title: Chapin business and family papers, 1815-1934.

Estate papers, including inventories, financial records and correspondence of a New Hartford, Connecticut family. Also bills and receipts, patent right transfers, water right transfers, court records, and merger records of the H. Chapin's Son company with the Stephens Company in 1901. Both companies produced wooden planes and rulers. Also records of the Chapin Machine Company, manufacturer of sewing machines, including correspondence and legal documents , as well as diaries, 1868, 180, 1871, kept by Philip E. Chapin, owner of the company. Additional items include deeds, summonses, receipts and probate records from the Bunnell, Stevens and Lines families and the papers of H. Wales Lines. Several anonymous memoranda/account books and a letter from James R. Hawley are included. The principal family members are Hermon Chapin, Catherine Merrill Chapin, Edward M. Chapin, Philip E. Chapin and Frank Chapin.
