Wolcott, partner in the Boston merchant firm of A. & A. Lawrence. Also, Cornelia F. Wolcott's letterbook of letters to her family and in particular to her sister Harriet F. (later Wolcott); Huntington F. Wolcott's letters written home while a member of the 2nd Mass. Cavalry during the Civil War; papers of Mass. Gov. Roger Wolcott including letters to his son Roger while the latter was away at summer camps, and letters written home from a trip abroad with his new wife, Edith (Prescott); papers related to Wolcott funds at Harvard University; and a book of copied poetry. (Cont'd) Papers of other families include a typescript of the diary (1786-89) of Catherine G. Hickling (later Prescott) kept on the island of St. Michael in the Azores; a phrenological study; a group of sermons (1746-1811), including several by Rev. Phillips Payson of Chelsea, Mass.; a typescript of the diary of Thomas G. (U.S. Volunteers) and Robert H. (24th Mass. Infantry) Stevenson to their sister Hannah [Stevenson?]. Papers includes correspondence; diaries entitled "Literary Memorandum"; drafts and proofs of his books Phillip II, Charles V, Ferdinand and Isabella, Conquest of Peru, Conquest of Mexico, and Memoir of Abbott Lawrence; research notes; Spanish manuscripts; diplomas; commissions; and newspaper clippings. Correspondence pertains to Prescott's research and publications, and his lifelong problems with his eyes. Correspondents include Sir Charles and Lady Mary Horner Lyell, Don Angel and Frances (Fanny) Erskine Inglis Calderon de la Barca, Thomas Aspinwall, George Bancroft, George Cabot, Nathan Dane, Edward Everett, Pasual de Gayangos, William Moody, Theophilus Parsons, Oliver Peabody, Catherine Green Hickling Prescott, William Prescott (1726-1795), William Prescott (1762-1844), David Sears, Jared Sparks, Obadiah Rich, Israel Thorndike, and George Ticknor, among many others. Also includes correspondence between Prescott and his parents William and Catherine Prescott, and a diary kept by Prescott during a voyage to visit his maternal grandfather in the Azores, and to treat the "rheumatism" of his eye in Europe, 1815-1817. Also includes Prescott family correspondence; business and legal papers of William Prescott (1762-1844); a diary kept by William Prescott (1762-1844), 1824-1845, deeds for family property in Groton and Pepperell, Mass., and Maine; a commonplace-book of Susan Amory Prescott, ca. 1842; diaries kept by Catherine Greene Hickling Prescott, 1786-89, while on a trip to the Azores and England; a travel diary kept by William Greene, 1778; a paybook kept by Col. William Prescott (1726-1795), 1775-1804; and an orderly book of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment commanded by his grandfather, Col. Diaries and correspondence of Thomas Hickling (1745-1834) and Thomas Hickling, Jr. (1781-1875) of St. Michael, the Azores, and correspondence of Amelia Hickling Nye of Cambridge and New Bedford, Mass. Diaries include a typescript of the journal of Thomas Hickling, Sr., describing a trip to England and France, 1 June - 21 October 1796, and two travel diaries of Thomas Hickling, Jr. The first, kept from 9 Sept. - [Oct.] 1833 describes a trip from New Bedford through New York State to Quebec and back to Boston; the second, kept from 8 Feb. - [April] 1844 describes a voyage from New Bedford down the east coast, through the southern states, and up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to Pittsburgh and on to Philadelphia. Correspondence includes letters from Amelia Hickling Nye to her daughter, Emma Chambers Jones, 1845-1855, noting local news, family news, and social engagements; a letter from Nye to Thomas Hickling, Jr., 1855, describing recent debates over slavery and slave laws; and a typescript copy of a letter from Thomas Hickling, Jr., to his sister (probably Catherine Green Hickling Prescott), 1845, discussing his personal business affairs and his life in the Azores.

Typescript copy of a journal of a trip to the Azores, July 8-Nov. 21, 1847 by Eliza W. Nye, daughter of Amelia (Hickling) and Thomas Nye Jr. of New Bedford, Mass. Describes a sea voyage with her father on the ship Sylph, whaling, and visiting the towns, countryside, and various families in the Azores, including the Dabney and Hickling families. Some mention is made of ELiza's mother and sisters, Amelia Nye, Sarah Nye, and Emma Jones. There is also a 2-page typescript "Lineage of the Hickling family" (1922). The journal was typed and edited by Grace and Edith Dana (1930). Letters with the journal include a typescript copy of a letter, Catherine Green (Hickling) Prescott to her half-brother Thomas Hickling (1848); several letters of Otmar Seeman to Grace Dana (1928); one from Seeman to "cousin Jack" (1939); and one to Mr. N.L. Harris (1940). Letters mainly concern Hickling family genealogy.

The papers are comprised chiefly of letters to Theodore Dwight, Henry Hart Milman, and American and European publishing firms. Subjects discussed include books by Dwight, Milman, George Bancroft and Thomas Babington Macauley, business relations with Richard Bentley, the anti-Catholic uprising in England, 1850, the U.S. presidential campaign of 1852, family matters, and the writing and publication of several of Prescott's books. Other topics include Prescott's trip to England, his British and American friends, and access to manuscript materials in Italian libraries and the archives of the Spanish legation. Fourteen engravings of Prescott are included.
