American music critic.
Olin Downes (1886-1955), American music critic with the Boston Post (1906-1924) and the New York Times (1924-1955).
Olin Downes, the music critic of the New York Times from 1924 to 1955, also active as lecturer and radio broadcaster, provided the impulse for the creation of the works Railroads on parade and Down in the valley, with music by Kurt Weill.
As music director of the New York World's Fair in 1938-39, he played a role in the commissioning of Weill's music for the pageant Railroads on parade. A more important commission for Weill, however, was that arranged by Downes as head of Frontiers Unlimited, a production company he founded together with the advertising executive Charles McArthur. Their purpose was the commissioning and producing of a series of short radio operas based on folk songs or ballads. In this capacity he was responsible for commissioning Down in the valley in 1945, which though never broadcast in the ill-fated series, became very successful in 1948 in a revised version as a (staged) folk opera. Downes' interest in, and generally favorable response to, Weill's music was much appreciated both by the composer and, after his death, by his widow, Lotte Lenya. Irene Stuart was an apparently well-educated opera fan who wrote to Downes to express her admiration for Down in the valley.
Of the New York Times.

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

A.P. Schmidt Company. A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
Title:
A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
The A.P. Schmidt Company archives contains music, correspondence, business and financial records, and related documents. These materials provide a detailed look at the management, daily operations, and history of the Schmidt firm. In the music series, which contains manuscripts and some printed music and is the largest part of the collection, are examples of music composed by Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and selected for publication by Schmidt. The majority of the music in the collection is in autograph form; some are holographs in the hand of the composer and many are the work of Schmidt company editors and arrangers. It is from these manuscripts that the Schmidt company prepared its publications. The music in the collection is principally for voice, chorus or piano, with some examples of large-scale orchestral music as well. It should be noted that none of the manuscripts of Edward MacDowell, one of Schmidt's most important composers, accompanied the collection to the Library of Congress. It may be assumed that after MacDowell's death, most of his manuscripts were returned to his widow, Marian MacDowell (see the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection). Among the major correspondents in the collection are Edward Ballantine, Florence Newell Barbour, Floy Bartlett, Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, Robert Braine, Gena Branscombe, F. Leslie Calver,Rosseter G. Cole, Mabel Daniels, Roland Diggle, G. A. Grant-Schaefer, Cora W. Jenkins, Boris Levenson, Marian MacDowell, John W. Metcalf, T. Tertius Noble, Mari Paldi, Anna Priscilla Risher, Thomas Tapper, and George Woodhouse. Other notable correspondents include Paul Ambrose, Willi Apel, J. Schoenberg, Arnold, 1874-1951. Correspondence with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1906-1943.
Title:
Correspondence with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1906-1943.
The correspondence, which is mainly addressed to Alma Mahler, documents her long-standing friendship with Schoenberg and support for his work, as well as his affection and regard for her and his engagement with the work of Gustav Mahler; it touches upon diverse aspects of Schoenberg's musical career. Roughly 40% of the correspondence comprises original items, dated from 1920 to 1963; the earlier correspondence, dated 1906 to 1920, exists in the form of typescripts. Topics of the earlier correspondence include Schoenberg's reflections on his own aesthetic in a dramatic text he had written; the merits of his wife, Mathilde, and his hopes that she would be included in invitations from Gustav and Alma Mahler; financial difficulties of and support for Schoenberg, including stipends through the Mahler foundation (in that context, exchanges concerning Richard Strauss's opinion of Schoenberg), the formation of a special fund (Arnold-Schönberg-Fond); mentions of Alma's friend Lilly Lieser; Schoenberg's lecture on Mahler, in 1912, and his comments on performances of Mahler's symphonies; Schoenberg's own current compositions and their performances; his responses to the outbreak and course of the First World War; his conducting of Mahler's adaptation of Beethoven's ninth symphony; his founding of a society for private musical performances (Verein für private Musik-Aufführungen); and Alma's gift to Schoenberg of 2 Mahler manuscripts. Topics of the later correspondence (from 1920 on) include plans for the foundation of a Mahlerbund; Schoenberg's decision to decline the invitation from Kandinsky and Gropius to teach at the Bauhaus; the death of Mathilde Schönberg and, later, Schoenberg's marriage to Gertrud Kolisch; Schoenberg's emigration to the U.S., in 1933; his teaching at UCLA and attempt to help Werfel find a position; performances of and reception of Schoenberg's work in the U.S.; his debate with music critic Olin Downes about Mahler's seventh symphony, as performed by the New York Philharmonic under Mitropoulos, in 1948; and his debate with Thomas Mann concerning Mann's references, in his novel Doktor Faustus, to Schoenberg's composition techique using 12 tones. After 1944 Gertrud Schoenberg takes a greater role in the correspondence, and she continues a friendship with Alma Mahler after Arnold's death. Included are a manuscript of Schoenberg's essay about Gustav Mahler written in 1911, after Mahler's death; a postcard bearing a photograph, apparently of Gertrud Schoenberg, in middle age; and the following newspaper clippings: 2 columns of Downes in the New York Times (1 of which includes Schoenberg's letter to him); the exchange between Schoenberg and Thomas Mann in letters to the editor of the Saturday Review; and various tributes in honor of Schoenberg's 70th birthday, published in the Austro American Tribune.
