Collection primarily comprises transcribed copies of letters sent by Parmelee to his parents and sister. The letters were stored in a commemorative binder originally put together as a service of the 149th War Relief Association; it featured 56 of Parmelee's letters (7 Sept 1917- 3 Nov 1918) transcribed onto a special paper stock. The originals for these letters are not included in the collection. Other items placed into the storage pockets of the binder included 5 transcribed letters excluded from the binder (5 Sept 1917-15 Oct 1917); 28 additional original letters and 13 postcards by Parmalee (1 Oct 1917-30 Mar 1919 and undated); a few newspaper clippings (1918, 1942); and 5 black-and-white photographs (1916-1917, 1942). In the letters Parmalee described the landscape and villages in both France and Germany; his leisure activities, including smoking, long walks, bathing, eating in cafes, receiving mail and packages, and writing letters. He mused about serving as a "non-com" rather than as an officer; gave his opinions regarding support services provided by the YMCA, Red Cross, National Guard, and Salvation Army; advised family members about what to believe in regard to newspaper reports and rumors circulating on the home front; and provided updates regarding the well being of his friends and family acquaintances from Illinois who were also serving in the military. In addition, he outlined his work building roads, doing reconnaissance, and serving as an instrument sergeant (see letters 27 May 1918 and 11 July 1918); described the activity of the artillery battery; and provided details regarding life in camp and on the front line, including descriptions of dugout conditions, aerial battles, and gas and mortar attacks. Finally, he described his training at Saumur in preparation for a commission (denied as a result of the end of the war) and the activities of the American occupation forces. Military campaigns mentioned include Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Lorraine, and St. Mihiel.
