Adams, John, 1735-1826. ALS, 1805 July 27, Quincy, Mass., to John Trumbull, Hartford, Conn.
Title:
ALS, 1805 July 27, Quincy, Mass., to John Trumbull, Hartford, Conn.
Observations on contemporary party politics and on George Washington and the politics of his first administration. A number of old families have turned Democrat to retain their influence; Adams regrets the growing factionalism, which he says is destroying states. In answer to a question from Trumbull, he says that it was political jealousy, especially from Hamilton's faction, that prevented Trumbull from receiving appointment under Washington. He believes that Hamilton's faction used Washington to raise Hamilton, and this has hurt the Federalists with the people. Hamilton was scheming and jealous of everyone, and eventually brought about his own death. Washington "did not know his own heart" and really did not want to retire as he thought and said he did. Trumbull had told Adams that he and David Humphreys wrote Washington's Newburgh Address, and Adams replies that he has always heard that much of Washington's work was written by others and asks who wrote the Farewell Address.

Adams, John, 1735-1826. ALS, 1790 Mar. 12, New York, to John Trumbull.
Title:
ALS, 1790 Mar. 12, New York, to John Trumbull.
After praising Trumbull's talents and advising him to ignore detractors, Adams amplifies on his letter of 9 March in which he replied to accusations reported by Trumbull. He traces the history and defends the merit of his family, and says that Americans' preoccupation with family background is worse than Europeans'. He claims that his theory of three independent branches of government, published in January 1776, has influenced all constitutions since. He wishes long life for George Washington, as he does not know who could replace him as president. Adams believes that he himself could beat Jay, Jefferson, or Madison, though he would not run if he thought any of them fit for office. He does not want to run for president since he would be put at the head of his party, a position he does not want. He complains about the salary and other inconveniences of the vice presidency and believes that some difficulties have been created just to make him resign.

ALS, 1805 Oct. 4, Quincy, Mass., to John Trumbull, Hartford, Conn.
Continues the discussion from his letter of 27 July about the authorship of letters attributed to George Washington. Speculates about the contributions of Washington's aides and secretaries. Recalls a conversation in which Washington was accused of falsehood in a published letter about the siege of New York and the capture of Cornwallis. Adams believes in Washington's honesty and the truth of the letter, though he defends the use of stratagems in war.

Compares the politics of wartime alliances in Europe with those of America, explains why republics are more warlike and formidable than monarchies, and notes the necessity to preserve harmony among the colonies in the present crisis. Apparently fearing enemy interception, Adams simply signed himself "Your friend".

Humphreys-Marvin-Olmstead collection, 1776-1867
Title:
Humphreys-Marvin-Olmstead collection 1776-1867
A collection of unrelated papers, linked by the family connections of the major figures. The papers of David Humphreys, a diplomat in the service of the United States, document his activities in Spain, 1789-1808. Also included are personal papers including correspondence with David Bushnell and Ezra Lee about submarines and with James Madison on politics, and some family correspondence. The papers of George William Erving, who was chargé d'affaires in Madrid (1804-1809) during Humphreys' tenure, complement the Humphreys diplomatic papers. The Marvin and Lemuel Gregory Olmstead (also Olmsted) families are represented by correspondence concerning life in New York and Connecticut in the 19th century. Of particular interest is a series of some sixty letters from Sarah Lucy Olmstead to her father describing her life in Erie, Pennsylvania from 1860-1865. Also in this part of the collection is a family photograph album and a journal kept by Lemuel Gregory Olmstead of his travels in New York State during 1830.

Title:
Thompson R. Harlow papers, 1939-1992.
Thompson R. "Tom" Harlow was associated with CHS for over 40 years. Most of that time was spent as Director and Director Emeritus. Among his papers is a variety of personal and professional correspondence, talks given, and research collected. Some of the material relates to clubs Harlow belonged to, including the Acorn Club and the Columbiad Club. Harlow researched a number of individuals, predominantly painters and engravers, such as Joseph Steward, Gerrit Schipper, William Page, Abel Buell, William Phelps, Daniel Wadsworth, Bernard Romans, and Amos Doolittle. Additionally, Harlow researched John Trumbull's epic poem, M'Fingal and the furniture donated to CHS by Frederick K. Barbour. Research was done on portraits of Lemuel Grosvenor and Eleazar Wheelock, both painted by Joseph Steward. The correspondence was between Harlow and many individuals. One of his long-time correspondents was friend and one-time CHS employee, William Warren. Notes from many of the talks Harlow gave may be found within the collection. Some relate to his research topics, and others are about CHS in general. Slides and photographs (some reproduction) are included.

ALS, 1790 Mar. 9, New York, to John Trumbull.
After giving Trumbull some advice on public life, Adams answers a number of accusations against himself apparently reported by Trumbull in a letter of Feb. 6. He gives an account of his ancestors, and his supporters and opponents in different parts of the country. He declares that he has no desire to be president but complains about the insignificance of the vice presidency. He defends his published opinions but declines to repeat or explain them at length, offers Trumbull three volumes of his writings and asks his opinions on them.

Title:
Papers, 1773-1903.
The collection includes ten interleaved almanacs, for the years 1808, 1809, 1813-1819, and 1822, which contain Joseph Trumbull's accounts and notes. There are two octavo volumes in which Louisa Clap Trumbull kept her "... feelings ... thoughts ... doings and undoings ..." for the period March 1829 to December 1879. The entries are sporadic (sometimes only one or two per year), though some are quite lengthy. Louisa recounts the history of her family, her early life, her present life, the life of her husband, and the lives of her children, as well as their spouses and children. There are also diaries of Louisa Jane Trumbull for the years 1829-1834; 1834-1835; 1836; and 1835-1836. They were kept because her sisters had journals and because her mother wanted her "to write what happens every day." The entries are sporadic and at times state that nothing of importance has occurred. The entries describe the activities and travels of the Trumbull family and their many visitors. There are references to Louisa's brothers and sisters and uncomplimentary comments about the Irish. There is also mention of sickness in the family and the death of her young brother, John Trumbull. The later journals include entries listing what she has read, as well as her reflections on self-improvement. For the year 1841, Louisa Jane Trumbull kept a record of her correspondence in _The Boston Almanac for the Year 1841_ (Boston: Thomas Groom, c1840). She made note of to whom letters were written and from whom letters were received; along with a note regarding the total number of each. The folio volumes include George A. Trumbull's one-volume account book, 1819-1823, in which he recorded the purchase and sale of books and paper supplies. There is also a family ledger kept from 1865-1885, in which is first recorded the income and expenditures of George A. Trumbull until his death in 1868, followed by accounts entered for Louisa Clap Trumbull, probably by her son, John, until her death in 1885. The collection contains miscellaneous papers, including a genealogical chart of the Trumbull family; deeds, bills, indentures, promissory notes, petitions, and correspondence; a photocopy of a typescript list of pictures owned by Dorothy McMahon of Plainville, Mass.; two copies of a photograph of James Henry Lea (1846-1914) made in Germany; a typescript of materials in the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library; two autographs of G. A. Trumbull, cashier; and a drawing of land taken from the Trumbull Estate by the Providence & Worcester Rail Road. Most of the legal documents concern family landholdings in Worcester. The collection also contains school copybooks of George A. Trumbull for the years 1801 to 1805 and an inventory of books and stationary bought from Isaiah Thomas, Jr. by George A. Trumbull, dated 1 March 1813. There is a collection of newspaper clippings (e.g., poetry, anecdotes, narrations) and receipts that had been found in George A. Trumbull's account book for the period 1819 to 1823. There are notes on the Trumbull family possessions, including estate inventories of Louisa Clap Trumbull, John Trumbull, Susan Trumbull Price, and Mary Louisa Trumbull Cogswell, along with an inventory of wedding gifts received by Susan Trumbull Price.

John Trumbull's correspondence with John Adams, Aaron Burr and others discusses politics, Yale College, and various scholarly matters. Also present is his sketch of the life of Governor Jonathan Trumbull. In addition there is a brief autobiography by Christopher Cary, the draft of a poem by Joel Barlow, and letters from Henry Clay, De Witt Clinton and Samuel Ryan, the latter giving an account of a naval engagement during the War of 1812.

Agrees with Trumbull about the authenticity of Washington's letter about the capture of Cornwallis. Recalls a variety of schemes to replace Washington as commander-in-chief. Adams regrets his ten-year absence in Europe while new young men and Tories were gaining power. Madison's followers support Jefferson to advance Madison's interests, as Hamilton's party backed Washington and other Federalists to raise Hamilton. Washington lived in terror of Hamilton. There are and always have been in each state four parties: Tories, Federalists, Democratical Republicans, and Jacobins.
