Consists of the letters of Richard Cutts, 1771-1845, Superintendent general of military supplies, Washington, D.C., to his father, Thomas Cutts, and to Thomas G. Thornton, Marshal of Maine, both of Saco, Maine. The letters are concerned principally with war news and include an account of the capture of Washington by the British in 1814. There is also news of Congress, of events in Europe, and of American diplomatic relations.

Title: James Madison, Dolley Madison, and James Monroe letters, 1804-1840.

Dolley writes chiefly to her sister Anna Payne Cutts and her cousins Mrs. Van Zandt and Mrs. L. Henry Cutts, as well as Mrs. Richard Smith and Mrs. Thornton. Dolley writes primarily concerning family matters. Topics include wigs; bad roads and swollen rivers; a letter from Thomas Jefferson about the death of Maria Jefferson Eppes; James Madison's poor health; her problems with her knee, rheumatism and her eyes; and her "ancient terror" of the Society of Friends. Also Thomas Jefferson's migraines; Aaron Burr on his way to Richmond for trial; the marriage of Lucy Payne Washington and Thomas Todd; Fedralists refusal to enter the Madisons' doors; her sister's childbirth; "curls and silk"; and her son Payne and his financial troubles. James Madison writes to Richard Cutts regarding plans to leave for Rockfish Gap and a package of Talavera wheat. He asks Joseph Delaplaine to send him some manuscripts to review for inaccuracies and two pamphlets, and thanks him for a volume of poetry. As rector of the the University of Virginia he thanks C.D. Cleveland for a copy of "Epitome of Grecian Antiquities" for the University library. James Monroe cannot meet withTench Coxe but informs him that changes considered for the Treasury Department have been stricken out. Monroe writes to General John Mason that it was impossible to make any other financial arrangements to pay him other than to authorize his agent, Major James Lewis, to sell some property above Charlottesville and a large tract in Kentucky. In a letter to an unidentified recipient he refuses to sanction the dedication of a book to him by Sir John Sinclair. In a letter to Sir John Borlase Warren Monroe discusses the exchange of prisoners of war between Great Britain and the United States and complaints regarding the conduct of the British government towards American seamen. In a letter to Mr. Agg, Monroe informs him that he has made some changes in a document before publishing in the "Whig."

The collection contains 5 letters from Nelly Conway Madison Willis to Dolley Madison relating news of family and friends. Of interest is a letter to Harpers concerning publication of Madison's papers and a letter from [Benjamin H.?] Latrobe concerning his wife's pain and necessary use of laudanum. Other correspondents include Richard Cutts, Catharine B. Farish, [B. H. ?] Latrobe, Frances Dandridge Lear, John Steele, C. S. Todd, Sally Wheaton, Dolley Coles Winston, Lucy Coles Winston, Martha Winston. The collection also contains documents signed by Dolley Madison as executrix of James Madison's estate. The documents include orders on the cashier of the Branch Bank of Virginia at Fredericksburg for payments designated int the will of madison to his niece and nephews Conway C. Macon, Henry Macon, Erasmus T. Rose, William Madison, Jr., Cattell Madison, James Madison Hite, and Rebecca Chapman. There is also an order for payment to Eliza Madison, guardian of the three sons of Robert S. Madison, and a promissory note drawn to the order of J. M. Cutts. Invitations and social notes addressed to Dolley Maidosn complete the collection. In addition there is some correspondence of other family members, particularly C. S. Todd and John Payne Todd, including a letter from George Mifflin Dallas and letters to James H. Causten and Mary Coles Payne.

Crawford, Henry Dearborn, Albert Gallatin, Elbridge Gerry, Nicholas Gilman, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, Harrison Gray Otis, and Timothy Pickering. In a letter, 1813 December 28, Jefferson advises Charles Clay that the prices for Mr. Forbes' cotton and wool carding machines are higher than originally estimated. In a letter, 1814 October 20, James Monroe informs Georgia governor Peter Early that the Georgia contractor must supply rations to both militia and regulars, asks him to make requisitions, and reports that Thomas Pinckney will need an officer from the Quartermaster Dept. for his militia. In a letter, 1817 October 12, James Madison writes to Richard Cutts regarding a gardener for Montpelier, missing numbers of "Niles' Weekly Register" and his autographed copy of Marbois' history of Benedict Arnold's treason which Richard Rush has. With these is an engraving of Jefferson by Thomas B. Welch.

In a series of pious letters, Francis Scott Key gives his daughter, Ann Arnold Key Turner, religious advice and sends her home news. There are some poems by Key including "Celebration hymn." The papers also include many letters to Ann Arnold Key Turner from her husband, Daniel Turner, and a letter from her to Jefferson Breckinridge explaining that her father was not an abolitionist. In another letter of interest Charles Howard describes the public mourning after the death of Francis Scott Key. Of special interest are a series of letters from Richard Cutts to his father Thomas Cutts describing the Embargo, the War of 1812, and the peace negotiations. The collection also includes Key and Turner family genealogies, a commonplace book of Ellen Lloyd Key and The life of O Possum, a children's story by Daniel Murray Key, whose death in a duel is mentioned in several letters and clippings. Correspondents include Stephen Decatur, John Young Mason, and Richard Rush.

Papers of physician, politician, and diplomat William Eustis and his wife Caroline Langdon Eustis. Correspondence concerns relations with Algeria during and after the U.S. conflict of 1815, and national politics from 1800-20. Included is a letter from Pres. James Madison written shortly before he left office, and several letters from Dolley Madison to Mrs. Eustis. Other correspondents include Richard Cutts, Henry Dearborn, Sarah Bowdoin Dearborn, and Francis LeBaron. Letters of Mrs. A. Palmer in Paris to William and Caroline Eustis concern their efforts to obtain furniture and rent a house during Eustis's term as U.S. minister to the Netherlands, 1815-18. Caroline Eustis's papers from 1825-64 concern financial matters. Also included are Caroline's 1806 diary, a journal apparently kept by William from 1816-17, and a journal recording major events at Benjamin Poor's Indian Hill Farm in West Newbury, Mass., 1821-25.
