Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.

Saying that all his efforts (chamber and orchestral music) were fruitless, that friends and acquaintances (Scherchen, for example) were of no use because Hindemith and Krenek (and a few dozen "Schnellkomponisten") waited daily with new masterworks, which Lendvai cannot do, mentioning some of his works, Puccini, etc.

Rudolf Kolisch papers, 1886-1978 (inclusive), 1917-1978 (bulk).
The papers reflect the entire range of Kolisch's professional and personal life and his close association with the protagonists of the Second, Viennese School, both before his emigration to the United States in 1939 and thereafter. Among the over one-thousand correspondents are composers, artists, concert and broadcasting agencies, universities, colleges, conservatories, as well as family members. Significant correspondents include Adorno, Berg, Eisler, Krenek, Leibowitz, Nono, Schoenberg, and Steuermann. The collection also contains Kolisch's entire, mostly unpublished, literary output. The large number of scores and parts for string quartet and various other combinations of chamber music contains performance and analytical markings; the audio holdings include unpublished recordings. The performance records, comprising programs, clippings, and diaries, are important documents of rehearsals and performances of both the Kolisch and the Pro Arte Quartets, and of his carreer as a soloist.

Title:
An oral history interview with Lotte Lenya / conducted for the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, [196-] : recording and transcript.
In a wide-ranging interview, Lenya discusses her own childhood and formative years in Zurich and Berlin and proceeds to an overview of Kurt Weill's career from the early operas to the later Broadway shows. She focuses particularly on the relationship between Weill and Brecht and on Brecht's dramatic theories, speculating on her own role in helping to form them. There is much discussion of Die Dreigroschenoper and Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, along with Die sieben Todsünden, Firebrand of Florence, and Street scene. She also describes reactions of Hindemith, Krenek, Reinhardt, and Klemperer to Weill or his work.

Krenek, Ernst, 1900-1991. Correspondence to Alma Mahler, Franz Werfel, and Adolf Klarmann, 1922-ca. 1963.
Title:
Correspondence to Alma Mahler, Franz Werfel, and Adolf Klarmann, 1922-ca. 1963.
Krenek's letters in the 1920s reflect the close personal contact he had with Alma Mahler at that time, due to his relationship with Anna Mahler as well as to the involvement of both Alma and Franz Werfel in Krenek's work on his first opera, Die Zwingburg; in a letter written to Adolf Klarmann in the 1960s Krenek clarifies Werfel's role in the writing of the libretto for that work, and a typescript of the libretto is included. Of the 2 items dating from the 1930s, 1 is a typescript of a speech given by Krenek for an evening concert of contemporary music ("Abend zeitgenössischer Musik") held by the Österreichischen Studio in Vienna. Several items to Alma from 1946 to 1955 reflect a continuing friendly relationship with her and touch on Krenek's teaching activities in the U.S. 2 items are addressed to Franz Werfel: 1 item in 1925 mainly concerns a performance of Werfel's adaptation of Die Troerinnen at the Staatstheater in Kassel, where Krenek was working at the time; and in 1941 Krenek writes to express his interest in working on the music for the film of Werfel's novel The Song of Bernadette. For an item of correspondence pertaining to the divorce of Krenek and Anna Mahler, see under: Universal Edition (Vienna, Austria).
