George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron, English Romantic poet known equally for his scandalous life as for his poetical genius. One of the most popular living poets of his day, his celebrity began with Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and rose to its apogee with Don Juan. The Lord Byron manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings, correspondence, and various documents. The writings include: a holograph fair copy of Marino Faliero ; a draft of Don Juan, Canto XVI ; and a holograph manuscript of "Fare Thee Well," his poem to Lady Byron upon their separation. The bulk of the correspondence is dated between 1818 and 1823 and discusses publishing matters, family arrangements, and his involvement in the Greek war for independence. Correspondents include: Teresa Guiccioli, his last mistress; Leigh Hunt, poet, journalist, and literary critic; Thomas Moore, Irish poet and songwriter; Percy Bysshe Shelley, poet; and over seventy-five others. The documents include checks, a letter of credit, and a codicil to his last will and testament.

Nicholson writes to "My dear Price" on matters related to pottery. [Letter] 1852 Sep. 12, Drs. Commons. He writes to Price sending him a drawing of the tower of the church of Santo Tomé of Toledo. This drawing/watercolor is bound in the Smith College Mortimer Rare Book Room copy of: Collections towards a history of pottery, by Joseph Marryat (London : John Murray, 1850). -- [Letter, n.d.] Doctors' Commons, Sunday night, "after dining with Slade." Nicholson sends another drawing, apparently of a piece of pottery in the "Cuarto Real in Granada." In the letter he sends wishes for the New Year. The letters were originally laid in the Marryat text.

Contains three letters: June 13, 1812 (copy with July 3 letter); July 3, 1812 (original and copy with August 10 letter); August 10, 1812. The June 13 letter states that he has accepted the offer of Rose as the most satisfactory that can be obtained, and is pleased to have recovered so much from the fire. The July 3 letter discusses certain financial transactions with the "Victualling Commissioners"; has heard nothing further in regard to the affair of the Charlotte, but has written the Right Honorable George Rose, treasurer of the Navy again; and hopes repeal of orders in council will have beneficial effect. The letter of August 10 states that the final settlement of the affair of the Charlotte is still deferred, since Davison has not yet paid into court the balance of the award of the register.
